Diablo 4 and Final Fantasy 16 have floored me in the last month or so.

Outstanding games.

You also have 4 billion things going on at once and it stays smooth

I guess I'm the odd one out but I find this new Sonic game to be pretty meh at first glance. I thought Sonic Mania was successful? Why isn't Sega working on Sonic Mania 2? I'd much rather have that.

I think the talk was that Sega / Sonic Team didn’t like what amounted to basically being an official fan project being the best reviewed and received game in the series so they never pursued anything further with the developers.

The good thing is, those devs all stayed together and started their own studio. Just revealed their first game last week coming in 2024, and it looks better than any non-Mania Sonic from the last couple decades.

My daughter is 6 so she is not the most coordinated and has struggled with some 3D games. I downloaded Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge which just became available on PlayStation Plus Extra and she and I played it for a good 45 minutes today and she loved it. It totally reminds me of the old arcade game and games for the NES/SNES

My kids loved that game. Then they saw TMNT (original series) on my Plex server and wanted to watch it. Now my 4-year old walks around the house singing the TMNT theme song, which makes me stupid happy

Also try Rayman Legends if you haven't yet. Super fun but very forgiving for novice players, my youngest loves playing it and was able to beat several levels on it by herself when she was 3

The art style isn't doing it for me, but it looks interesting. Nice to see Sega still has no idea what they're doing though. Way to go...throwing away a good thing like Mania.

Man it's so easy to get sucked into multiple hours of Diablo 4 grinding. Simple formula but man it's so addictive.

FFXVI is a very bizarre case -- the game itself I find to be just okay, but it's a magnificent cinematic spectacle that I really think is unrivalled in the gaming space. I'm not as big on story / cutscene heavy games these days as I used to be, but it's so well produced, grandiose, and ridiculous that you can't help but have a stupid smile on your face when it really gets going.

Having spent about 15 hours this weekend on FF16, I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm really enjoying the story and the grandiose spectacle of it. The voice acting is fantastic, and the cinematics are some of the best of I've ever seen in video games. But the old school in me misses the more traditional RPG elements. Leveling up, equipment management, and even party members are more of just an afterthought at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I still very much enjoy the game, and can't wait to play through the rest of it. Even though I pine for more traditional turn based, the battle system still plays really well. It plays a lot like Nier Automata, so I have no complaints there. But it is sad that the Final Fantasy that I grew up with in the 90's and early 2000's probably won't be coming back, at least not in a mainline FF.

Some tips when you're done the campaign and move into world tier 3 and 4:

Use an online map to find and grab every Lillith statue (https://mapgenie.io/diablo-4/maps/sanctuary). They're free stat points for every character you make, grabbing every one in a zone gives you a large chunk of renown, and it's an easy way to fully explore the map

Do every helltide event. There are certain crafting materials that you only get in that event and you need a lot of them to fully upgrade your legendary gear

Concentrate on the Mystery Chests in helltides, you get way more high end gear from those than the regular chests. They're hidden on the map and only appear on your minimap when you get close, so you can use a site like https://helltides.com/ to tell you where they are. That site is also handy for knowing how long until the next helltide event, and also when world bosses spawn

Don't bother selling any items until you're past level 50, break everything down for materials. Also don't be afraid to scrap legendaries you don't need, you'll be swimming in them down the road with the aforementioned helltides

Gems are kinda weak at the moment, don't bother picking up the lower level ones and spending money to upgrade them. Flawless gems drop like candy in the later tiers and you'll eventually just ignore them all together, at least until Blizzard buffs them a bit

Don't burn yourself out trying to complete every dungeon, they're all pretty much the same. Just do the ones for the legendary aspects you want, and past that just do the nightmare dungeons to upgrade your paragon glyphs

The tree of whispers stuff is also kinda pointless right now, the rewards suck compared to helltides or nightmare dungeons. I only do them if they happen to overlap with a helltide

Definitely need some kinda of auto pick and storage fixes for gems. Just convert them into counters and not actual items anymore. More tabs and storage along with more stuff/capstones between 70 and 100. It's a pretty massive gulf of repeat in that range.

Oh and more sorting options. Like sort by aspect for the love of god.

Not looking forward to doing all the lilith altars and renown all over again every single season. Seems like a bad cockblock decision.

The devs have already stated Lilith statues will carry over all characters, seasonal or not. And as for renown, there's really no reason to max it out for seasonal characters. Once the season is done the character transfers to the eternal realm (where everyone is currently) where they then receive all the renown rewards you've already collected

Yeah I don't understand why they gave you a separate tab for potions but gems take up storage with armor and weapons. Would have been nice to have a separate tab for jewelry.

Looks like a D4 buff patch.

EDIT - nightmare teleport alone is worth it. But why port to outside instance and not actually inside. Extra loading screen to slow you down?

I'm having enough fun with D4 (and D3 before it) that I decided to give D2: Resurrected a try since it's on sale, but holy hell that game hasn't aged well even with the new coat of paint. The stamina bar and the mountain of potions you need to have (in your tiny inventory) made the game enough of a slog. But when I got to Tristram, died, and saw all of my gear was gone I noped out and got a refund. Nobody has time for that ####
