One of the better UFAs off the market. Hopefully this increases the value of some assets the Flames want to sell.

This is a mistake. He had a good run down the stretch and was solid in the playoffs. This isn't a guy I identify as a core roster piece, but now he's being paid like one for 5 years. Getting same money as Conn Smythe winner Marchessault.

He looked to be a great fit with Vegas,
That line played really well.
He had a really strong playoffs.

I really like Barbashev and I was a huge proponent for bringing him to the Flames at TDL, but $5M AAV? Eww

Yes, but it's a very small sample size. He had a nice season a couple years ago with St. Louis and put up about 25 goals and 60 points. I think that's about as much as you can realistically expect from him. With teams being so cap-strapped it seems like a lot to pay to keep a guy based on fit alone, and not on talent. You have to believe that the chemistry will remain the same, because otherwise you're paying a middle 6 winger quite a lot.

Is $5M core roster piece money?
He's 27 years old. He had 60 points last year, 45 points this year, and was great in the playoffs.
This deal takes him to 32, which was the age Smith was now.
So resets their clock by 5 years for the same cap hit and similar production the last two seasons.
Seems fair value to me.

Exactly.
5 million bucks isn’t core player money anymore.

Only kind of, as they had both for the stretch run and playoffs...

Don't worry, they'll trade him at the next deadline.
