You can do it by whatever you want, Toffoli is a superior hockey player.

smith averaged 1 minute and 20 seconds more on the ice each game than Toffoli did over the past 3 seasons.

Toffoli has had two careers seasons in the last 3 years. So that certainly helps him, almost makes it seem like that is more of who he is than what he did 8 years ago.

All 5 of those guys are born in 91 or 92. And Toffoli was coming off the best season, with Smith a close second (gets some points for winning a cup) and IMO Toffoli got the best return by far.

Just no market for 30+ year old forwards even if they are only making $4M or so.

Man the trade market is soft right now. Even though he is older that's an established 50-60 point guy with a not terrible contract and term left. Would rather the flames keep Hanifin then deal him for pennies on the dollar like that.

Toffoli got a lot more powerplay time and probably more ice time as well. Smith is a guy who they move around the lineup as needed, but drops down when they are healthy.

Smith got more EV strength time by about a minute a game and Toffoli got about 36 seconds more PP time a game than Smith over the past three years. Smith was a staple on the Vegas PP and Toffoli was a staple on his teams PP.

The fact of the matter is that Toffoli is a significantly better hockey player than Hall, Smith, Johansen or Hayes right now. One would hope he would garner a better return.

Toffoli is a better player at a lower cap hit. 30 goals at his price tag is amazing value if you get it.
The one vs. two year term can be looked at differently.

But the Toffoli return was miles better. So that feels pretty good.

Rielly Smith is a really good comparison for Backlund and what we could expect back for him. A 2024 3rd for Backlund sure is a long way off from the first rounders being bounced around.

Yeah definitely a buyers market. Goes to show you how smart NSH was to get the haul they pulled in at the deadline by getting out in front of things. Smart management.

It's odd that the trade market is soft given the UFA crop is poor, but speaks to how constrained cap is. The question is, will it open up later in the off-season or not? No idea.

I can't remember who said it but there was an interesting discussion about how draft picks increase in value closer to the draft because they are associated with the player they think they will pick. At the deadline draft picks are worth less. The Flames can stand to be patient until trade deadline day when teams are starting their weapons race. Arguably the 2024 draft if the rebuilt draft for the Flames anyhow, since they will likely pick in the top 10.

Yeah, I think you got to keep the UFAs at this rate maybe outside of Hanifin

I think it is really this. Which tells me things should be better at the trade deadline, but that poses it's own problems.

It only took 20 years, but teams figured out players earning market value are worth nothing.

? No. Smith is a winger, Backlund is a two-way centre. Don't see the similarity.
