I love when people make up a wall off text story about how Conroy is telling everyone what he is doing.

We haven't heard of one trade request until Toffoli and that's because he was upset the team didn't make him the priority. It happens.

None of Lindholm Hanifin or Backlund have asked for trades. Nor has Conroy publicly said he is trading them.

Hanifin said no so he is being shopped.
Lindholm must have indicated something to causes them to pauses and negotiate a deal.
Backlund has asked for a trade the last two offseason. This year looks like he's ready to play out his deal and leave.

These are pretty much guesses as well the same stuff that leaked last season about Johnny and Matthew.

So I don't see how this is Conroy babbling to the media our businesses.

Look at Winnipeg everyone knows who is available the players came out and said they are not extending should the GM be blamed?

Friedman just said he is hearing there are "a lot" of players around the league available for free.

Tough year to try to trade these guys.

Listening to TSN Ottawa radio, offers for DeBrincat are nowhere near where they want them to be either.

So we aren't alone. Tough time to be a seller. Have to hope that teams really want the player and will step up with a reasonable offer.

I think with the quality of players available in the first couple of rounds of this draft that teams are more preoccupied with drafting over trades.

Toffoli asked for a trade. What is the right thing in Conroy's current position where you have a lot of upcoming UFA's and all the upheaval?

Tell those who asked for a trade...

1) "Well that's TFB and to STFU because you have a contract and I'll decide when to trade you"?

Or

2) "Pack your #### and GTFO!!" and take what you can get in a trade?

Tough spot.

I just can't see teams walking away from Hanifin, possibly with salary retained, or Lindholm for that matter. I still think both are dealt, but on the floor today.

I hope so. It would make today much more interesting.

Me too, I think either Hanifin or Lindholm is moved out today. Probably Hanifin if I had to pick one.

This draft has been hyped so much, it’s hard to see a GM walking from it.

Several teams with multiple firsts, they'll move them.

All in need of a C or D

Colorado, Buffalo, St. Louis, Detroit, Nashville

Is Detroit at the development curve where they want a Lindholm or Hanifin? Or are they just restarting their rebuild? It’s hard to see where they are actually going. Their team just isn’t competitive now, and a lot of their draft picks haven’t played out very well.

I think Hanifin bridges that. He's young enough that they could sign him long term and he could be hitting his peak (age wise/statistically) as they become a contender in a few years. Same for Buffalo, really. Unlike if someone goes for Lindholm, which is why I thought he'd be a good fit in Columbus. They need to win now. You'd sign him long term but you're paying him to produce now.

Of course, for the same reason, Hanifin could just stay here.

Ideally, yes. But he said he won't so find someone in the same boat contention wise.

It’s not just the draft. Teams are capped. Most can’t bring in any substantial salary without sending salary back, either in the deal or in a side deal. It makes trades extremely difficult to arrange.

When you’re looking at players like Hanifin and Lindholm who will be getting big extensions, it makes it even harder to fit them into a cap structure. The Kings had to make two trades before the Dubois deal (which itself sent $4 mil in salary out) to fit him in to their structure longterm.

Also, waiting 3 days from today allows teams to then go 10% over the cap in any deal they make, and then 3 months to figure out how to get compliant.

That actually hasn't been reported as far as I can see. It's been extrapolated and suggested.

This is exactly the Flames luck. Exactly what would happen when we suddenly have valuable assets to sell off.

"Wow, those are some great players you guys have available, most years you'd be in for a haul. This off season those star players are going for *checks notes*....nothing. They're basically free".

Meh. Free players are free for a reason. Lindholm's and Hanifin's at 2.5 million will always have value. If not at the draft, try again later

Not shocking when the cap has only gone up 1 mill
