Would you have been happy if we traded Toffoli for Milano and a 3rd? I understand that Milano is 2 years older, but they're comparable defensively, and have similar production 5 on 5.
But that wasn't the trade available this one was with the player 2 years younger.
Not sure why Milano plays into this.
They probably looked at a player of similar attributes and age not older and PTO worthy.

He doesn't play into this. However trying to simply compare Toffoli's 5 on 5 production to Sharangovich is doing mental gymnastics for a bad trade. That's why I'm saying that Sharangovich can be just as easily be compared to Milano, whom we all remember from training camp.
It’s easy to say Toffoli could’ve gotten more or to state that he had more value, but the market is the market. We can dream up 100 different scenarios but when guys are available the offers are what they are. If Toffoli could’ve gotten a 1st or two 2nds, someone would’ve offered a 1st or two 2nds.
This wasn’t some guy who was a surprise trade. Everybody knew he was available, and you can pretty much guarantee more offers were out there. There’s no reason to believe the Flames didn’t take the best one, and it’s a hell of a lot better than losing him for nothing or re-signing him long term, right? So what’s the issue?

It’s not mental gymnastics, it’s comparing the two guys involved in the trade. How could that even possibly be considered mental gymnastics? That’s what literally everyone does after every trade… ever!
A big part of this trade’s value is still unknown- what will Sharangovich sign for to understand how much cap space we are saving.
Until that is determined it’s a little bit premature to judge. Personally, I don’t like the notion of where they’re headed strategically and that has Murray Edwards direction all over it.
To be honest, I don’t really care about this trade. These next few days are going to really make me ponder about how much I care about the Flames if they don’t have the guts to do what is so painfully obvious and necessary. I think there’s little to debate in earnest about strategically what direction this team needs to go to win, and the trade today is pretty, meh, and unclear, in that direction.
We need 1sts and cap space. Not more players and bs. You have 6 now UFAs and players humming and hawing about wanting to be here. Rip the bandaid off and do what’s necessary. Stop sacrificing value to make a buck Murray. For #### sakes it’s stupid short term thinking and will NEVER end in a championship. Ever.
Not really a meaningful statement. Meier took his spot in the lineup and Lindy decided he liked the bottom six as-is.
Ok what? Not like they went on to win the Cup. Being scratched for 9 of 12 playoff games certainly means something. Wasn’t considered an upgrade over the bottom six as they are being dismantled in the second round isn’t good news.
Hopefully he reverses direction here.

He's not a bottom 6 player. Meier took his spot.
Your stat is irrelevant and doesn't mean anything, if you actually watched the Devils play more than twice a year you wouldn't have made your original post, and for sure wouldn't have doubled down on an awful take.

Not really because the 2 years makes a big difference and Milano has a bigger body of work that shows he's probably not much more than that.
Sharangovich has much better per 82 game numbers in his only 3 NHL seasons.
20-21: 46 points, 24 goals per 82 games
21-22: 49 points, 26 goals per 82 games
22-23: 33 points, 14 goals per 82 games
So to me that is actually buying low on a player that had good NHL seasons at 22 and 23 years old, and maybe a down year in 22-23 in his 24 year old season.
At first glance sure the 73 points vs the 33 points looks bad for the Flames. But a 3 year view shows a young player that had a pretty good start to his career prior to this last season.

Agree the market is the market- but very, very, very curious how much negotiation went into this. I have my doubts they scrubbed super hard on it for the sake of preserving a new GM relationship. Total guessing here, but if I’m right I don’t think that’s acceptable.

How is comparing 5v5 stats of the two players involved in a deal mental gymnastics. 5v5 production, over very similar GP and TOI is easily the best way to compare two players.
Toffoli played 3x the PP time and on top units, Sharangovich didn't, that has to be considered.
And I'd be shocked if Toffoli cracks a top PP unit that has Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Meier, Mercer and Hamilton as options next year too.
