Meanwhile TT probably moves on from the Devils next summer with a Meier extension by Jersey, and since they'll hang on to him for their playoff run, possibly for nothing.
Sometimes the good/right thing isn't exciting on day 1. The instant gratification route hasn't got us anywhere though.

I don't think you trade a cheap 25 year old with any significant potential for a 31 year old soon to be UFA. Or at least I wouldn't. It's not like they are a Toffoli away from winning the cup.

I think they think they are a lot closer to winning the cup than you do.

Yes you do because if you sign the RFA his contract pushes into future years and cap space will be needed for other players. I think this just signals that the devils are going to be making a push to win in 2023/2024 and if Toffoli gives a 30g year and leaves no big deal

This trade is growing on me.
Obivously hoping he pops off in a change of scenary.
Reminds me of the Haula for Zacha trade last season.
Zacha was similar age/production as Sharagovich. Has worked out pretty good for Boston.
The third is a bit of icing
Edit:
Still leaves me unsure of what we're trying to do.
I don't think a retool of change of scenery players is what this team needs.

Treleeaved on April 17. That's 441 days before Toffoli's contract would expire..."impending" is the wrong word choice.
I doubt any teams start negotiating early extensions in the weeks immediately following the season.

Well teams are run by people, and people are prone to mistakes. They don't have crystal balls.
They're also prone to believing their team is 1-2 pieces away.
Just look up the highway.

Hearing Toffoli's comments, it sounds like he really wanted to use last season to leverage the Flames into a lucrative contract extension, but when the Flames didn't initiate anything, he wanted to try his luck elsewhere. He probably knows that he is unlikely to repeat a career year next season and didn't want to wait.
Nothing against Toffoli. He was a good player for us, but he is not the kind of player you want to give a really expensive long term contract to.

I could see him on the top line with Huberdeau and a free agent to be Lindholm next season.

I have crystal balls. It doesn’t help me predict the future but they make a pleasant clinking noise when I walk.

I think the fact that Conroy didn’t give Toffoli a long-term extension but traded him for assets is the best thing about this trade.

And I think he's probably right.
I would have bet our top PP unit wouldn't have been built around Tyler Toffoli next season with Muller and Sutter gone.
Hell it's baffling that he seemed to be the focal point of the PP last season with Lindholm and Huberdeau playing secondary roles.

I have no problems with this deal.
I don't love it either, but I have no problems with it.
I like the attributes Sharangovich will bring. He's younger, more versatile, kills penalties, is faster, is bigger, is cost controlled, and put up similar 5v5 points to the guy we shipped out.
My brain: "That's good!"
He also will probably not score as many goals or points this year since Toffoli will be playing on an offensively talented team.
"That's bad!"
He also comes with a 3rd round pick.
"That's good!"
The trade has been evaluated by many media members to be a major win for New Jersey and not us.
"That's bad!"
The 3rd round pick was originally the Flames' pick and was traded away with two other picks (2nd and 7th) to acquire UFA rental Calle Jarnkrok, then went through several organizations before coming back in this trade for what is essentially a UFA rental.
"....?..."
That's bad.

The Flames are finally doing the right thing with their 30 year olds.
And not at the last possible moment, but a year ahead.
This is a momentous occasion. Even if the trade isn't an outright grand slam, they actually did the right thing. That's worth celebrating.
Now they just have to do it a few more times, and work on their poker faces in the process.

5v5
Toffoli: GP-208, G-40 , P-84, TOI-2571
Sharangovich: GP-205, G-35, P-76, TOI-2633
Power Play
Toffoli: GP-208, G - 25, P-51, TOI-501
Sharangovich: GP-205, G-4, P- 6, TOI-152
So pretty much all the difference in their production is PP. So then the question that I ask is Toffoli a much better PP player, or did he just get more opportunity.
|
Okay let's compare Sharangovich to Milano 5on5 over the last 2 seasons.
Milano: 130GP, 19G, 51P
Sharangovich: 151GP, 25G, 55P
Would you have been happy if we traded Toffoli for Milano and a 3rd? I understand that Milano is 2 years older, but they're comparable defensively, and have similar production 5 on 5.

He is comparing trading for one season vs. 2 and a half seasons not to mention the age
How is that accurate at all
The Flames got 1 and a half seasons of Toffoli plus what they acquired today

I'm intrigued to see what Toffoli's production is next year.
Is he going to be on the top PP unit in NJ?
Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Meier, Mercer, Hamilton...
Seems doubtful.
