Is he a centre or left wing, if centre he take Backlunds spot for less money. If he’s a left winger I don’t understand the trade. We already have huberdeau, mang; dube at LW

That said, extending Tofoli after his career year last year would have been a mistake based on what it would likely have cost.

I don't know; If we look at it your way what if we kept lucic and TT and jestened the others.

Lucic and TT are older players the Flames got younger, bigger, faster and a player probably needs more playing time with top guys like Bennett. We also got more cap space which gives us more options and flexibility. We do need to move away from what the coach wanted to what the GM and organization wants, Conroy himself said this. Sutter hockey doesn't cut it anymore we need to get younger and faster while adding skill. Have some patience, let's see what Conroy is up to.

Seems like a hail mary trade to see if this guy can stick. If the Devils had seen any upside they would've just taken the cheap qualifying offer instead of trading for Toffoli.

		| For the past three years, Yegor Sharangovich has made a name for himself on the east coast - but only just scratching the surface of what many believe he's capable of.
Now, the next chapter will unfold right here in Calgary.

"He's kind of come on the radar the last two or three years," said Flames GM Craig Conroy, shortly after announcing a dinnertime deal with the New Jersey Devils that sent Tyler Toffoli back the other way. "I've read the reports. I've watched him. And when you see him, he's a big guy, he skates well, he goes to the net and shoots the puck well. He has that knack around the net and is only getting better - especially at 25.

 "His game is just coming.

"We feel like if we put him in a position to have success, he will."
 |
Sounds like he will be given lots of opportunity at the very least.

Probably why the prospect pool and picks are bare at the moment. Traded away way too many picks with complete disregard.
 |
This is why I'm hoping for the reverse Hamonic trade from Hanifin.

Toffoli for a young middle-6 winger & a 3rd round pick in a deep draft. Not sure what more people could reasonably expect?
I like the trade. Sharangovich is young enough that his best years should still be ahead of him, and there should be intriguing players available at 80th OA.

Devils are in their window, they need a sure thing for right now. Tyler is that.

Flames can afford the patient approach and help the kid try to reach his potential at this level.

If it pans out they'll come out of this looking pretty good.

Meanwhile TT probably moves on from the Devils next summer with a Meier extension by Jersey, and since they'll hang on to him for their playoff run, possibly for nothing.

Sharangovich kinda gives me some Rene Bourque vibes.
Bourque was in a similar spot in Chicago before he came to Calgary and popped.

Big, can skate, great shot, kills penalties.

Look forward to seeing what he can do in Calgary. Hopefully it pays off.

I think we're due for a Sam Bennett coming here and blooming.

I’m not actually upset about moving the “Sutter players” like TT and Lucic out. To your point on getting younger or not committing to an older TT is bang on.

I’m more worried about who we keep or have on the books. Are they a group that just needed a different style coach, or are they a group that doesn’t know what it takes to win and this league and revolted when pushed to do so? I hope it’s the former, but worry it’s the latter.

Not really a meaningful statement. Meier took his spot in the lineup and Lindy decided he liked the bottom six as-is.

I like Sharangovich more than Newhook, so it's almost like the Flames got a late first rounder.
Sharangovich is a bit older than Newhook but he's also put up better numbers and is bigger.

Flames biggest need is bigger forwards with skill and speed and Sharagovich fits that mold.

Great post, good player but NJ needed to lean on experience in the playoffs, they are doing the kid a favor trading him. Calgary on he other hand needs to get younger and faster. They have room to give him more opportunities as he develops into his role.

			Totally fine with this trade!
Also, watch - our scouting staff will pick a franchise player with that 3rd round pick. Once that happens, this trade will be so lopsided in our favour. Don't discredit the other piece in today's transaction.

Only it'll be another NCAA player and he won't sign! Lol, I'm joking....or am I? I don't know any longer.

			I don’t hate this.
End of the day, we turn a 31 year old UFA into a 25 year old RFA who scored 24 goals the season before last.

He’s Russian, and now is a good time to be signing Russians, since they don’t want to be sent to Ukraine - having Zadorov was good, having two will be better - Russia produces too many quality players for the Flames to have ignored them for 20 years.

He’s not going to be expensive - $2M salary, coming off a down year. And it’s not like he’s gonna be some $6M player on an extension either.

And we get a 3rd rounder back as well.

I don’t want them to get PLD’d on the Lindholm/Hanifin deals, but I can live with this return for Toffoli quite easily.

One thing I'll give Conroy a bit of credit here for is having the guts to make the deal.
I'm sure he knew that he would get roasted by the fans and media a bit here, because on the surface the deal doesn't look that even, but he made the deal anyways and has stood by it and has shown some strong knowledge of the player (the 5v5 stat mention made me happy).

In the end it's not a great trade, it's not a terrible trade but I think it's an okay trade. And I also think he needed to make one move just to release the pressure a bit before maybe moving the more valuable pieces in Hanifin and Lindholm.
