To be fair, it’s really difficult to figure out what realistic situations those same people wouldn’t be bitching about.

Want to sign Toffoli?

“Too old! Past his prime! Too much money! Any term is bad term!”

Want to trade Toffoli?

“Anything less than a 1st rounder in the most hyped draft in a decade+ IS CRIMINAL for a player of Toffoli’s calibre!”

Just goofy.

Not an overwhelming return.

But at least a return.

The team is a little younger and faster now, with less salary and an extra third round lottery ticket.

It won’t be a bunch. Assuming they sign him at least a 3 year contract, he’ll get over $3M.

Weird. I get the opposite feeling. It looks clear to me that Conroy is doing exactly what he talked about doing when he was hired: he is moving out pending UFAs who won't commit to re-signing, and he is making the team younger and faster.

Thank god. Who wants a selfish player that's a proven playoff choker.

Can’t be a playoff choker if you don’t get played when your team is in the playoffs

Yeah, I've been listening. Saying is one thing, doing is another.
Was hoping the thinking part could work independently of the talking part?

Either this team was going to try to stay competitive for another season or go full rebuild. But unsurprisingly they're instead going to pretend to do both.

It's a bold strategy to be sure. Some of us will even delude ourselves into believing it will work.

Well his arb certainly isn’t going to award him more than his QO.

Not sure what people expected Byfeild and a 1st?

Not getting a 2nd or 1st sucks but we got a proven NHL player who had 20 goals a year ago replacing a 20 goal scorer who us 6 years older and sower wanting to cash in on a career year.

Also helps getting this group another pick.

Just because Tre overpayed for him has nothing to do with his current value. He is one year from UFA so he is a rental for the Devils, after the big contracts they just handed out they are not giving Toffoli big term and dollars. People are way overvaluing the market. Taylor Hall, a former Hart trophy winner and first overall pick just went for a 6th. Kevin Hayes just returned a 6th with half his salary retained. I think Conroy got good value here.

I’d rather have 10.5 Million JGs than 10.5 Million JHs.

But you can’t have it all.

It is amazing to me that people are discovering this just now. Conroy was perfectly clear when he was hired that he believes this is a really good team that will compete again this season.
