Flames always said they were going to take the best offer on the table. It's not like they chose this deal over better offers and left assets on the table. The market dictated Tofoli's worth and this ended up being it. People saying we should have waited until the trade deadline underestimate the potential for Tofoli to have a bad year and really diminish his marketability.
I personally know nothing about the guy we got in return other than a quick google search and what others have said about him. This isn't a homerun trade for Conroy but people are being overly critical of the deal. The expectation of getting a first round pick or a huge haul just aren't feasible when being dealt this deck of cards. If a player wants out and requests a trade you are negotiating from a position of weakness. Other teams know this.
Patience is key and I think fans will be pleasantly surprised with what we got back.
Problem is...you cannot sign him to a 4x3M or 4x4M after the season he just had...what he should really get is a 1x2M...which means he is a Ufa next summer...
Won’t be UFA for 2 years from what I can see
Sign him to a 2x$2 or 3x$2.75 and go from there
Either way you gain $1.5-$2M in cap space this year, and a guy who produced at the same rate of Toffoli 5v5 last 2 seasons.
So if Sharangovich turns into a faster Toffoli (at his average production) and this cap space they've freed up allows them to keep the other key UFAs, will you be mad?
Toffoli's price is not high these days. He needs good line mates to make him good.
And he doesn't want stay here specially he might thought he's production will fall big to impact his next contract.
So for me:
- If Sharangovich out score Toffoli - Great!
- If Sharangovich has similar production as Toffoli - Okay, we got 3rd rounder.
- If Sharangovich worse and liability - It's Okay, then he will help Flames to fall in standings to get high drafts.
So I'm still okay with the return.
Depends what we do with the third. If we can find kylington type gem in the 3rd it's worth it.
if we draft another hunter smith though...

Yet Conroy just said that he’s a great penalty killer.

Just checked, he started in the O zone 57% of the time so I think I'm talking about the right guy. I mean he could still be good on the PK, not mutually exclusive.
Flames are 100% baking on their pro scouts having found a gem here.
I mean some of this is kinda dumb. Is he ignoring that Toffoli's value back then was in part because he was signed for a really attractive cap hit for a couple more years?
He's now a pending UFA.
Don't know enough about the lad to really evaluate it accurately but it sure sounds like the brass intend on putting him in positions to show what he has. I'm optimistic and pleased we have something to talk about. People also forgetting that there'll be more teams and the deadline looking to offload players, so who knows what the market will be then.
I’ve been saying for days that teams will move 2023 first round picks very reluctantly, if at all.
I am not seeing anything that suggests otherwise. Except for very late ones perhaps.
Just on fan emotional content, trading first round picks in any draft let alone this one seems to be something GMs would be reluctant to do. Fans want to see ther kids their team is picking, not hear about getting a 31 year old winger. Those picks are much more expendable at the TDL. Mid round picks are another story.
