If this was the Treliving regime we would've walked toffoli to free agency to "just get in"
I'd say this is a step forward from what we were doing prior to this.

Can't rip it until those two assets mature.

Hard to like this deal, but my frustration is more with the marketplace than anything.
Cap space is at a premium. Have to assume the flames are willing to eat salary on the Hanifin/Lindholm deals and therefore didn’t eat on this one, so the fact that they took full hit is reflected in the value.

The Flames are always in the playoff mix, there is no way they would have traded Toffoli.

They would have held onto him and hope that they could make the playoffs.

Toffoli would have walked for nothing.

Yes, trade deadline value would be higher, but (1) Flames would never have traded Toffoli at the deadline and (2) you also take on the risk that Toffoli might get injured and can't get traded.

This trade is average, it's not great, it's not terrible. It only looks terrible because many posters on this board have been thinking that the Flames would be getting a 1st round pick in one of the deepest drafts in years for Toffoli. That was never going to happen. If a 1st round pick in 2023 was available, Conroy would have taken it.
 |
I seriously think no first rounders are on the table right now.

Nah, why some people get upset for the return.
Toffoli's price is not high these days. He needs good line mates to make him good.
And he doesn't want stay here specially he might thought he's production will fall big to impact his next contract.

 So for me:

 - If Sharangovich out score Toffoli - Great!
 - If Sharangovich has similar production as Toffoli - Okay, we got 3rd rounder.
 - If Sharangovich worse and liability - It's Okay, then he will help Flames to fall in standings to get high drafts.

So I'm still okay with the return.

The player? I have no idea what he is - haven’t watched him. They say he’s fast, a possession driver and has a shot. That seems like something Calgary has been missing. And he’s 25, but only barely, and he doesn’t have very many miles on him.

And Toffoli? Last year was a huge outlier, and a product of Sutter using him a ton, the power play being focused on him (to the exclusion of Lindholm and Huberdeau) and just a strange year. He’s normally a 50 point or so guy. He’s pretty slow and he’s 31. Everyone agrees it was time for him to go, including him.

Let’s pump the brakes on declaring this a failure.
 |
2 years ago Toffoli was on pace for 44 goals and 25 assists for 69 points over 82 games. Not sure last year was much of an outlier.

Exactly. The Flames aren't trading 29 year old Toffoli with 3 contract years left. They traded 31 year old Toffoli with 1 year left. He is unlikely have another career year at this point and likely sees a modest drop in points. The Flames also payed trade deadline prices which are different and usually a lot higher.

Warrener was right when he said we should have traded these guys at the deadline last season, but we didn't and this is what happens.

Anyway, Sharangovich is a decent player that still has a lot of room to grow. This isn't a good or bad deal until we see how it plays out.

I’ve been saying for days that teams will move 2023 first round picks very reluctantly, if at all.

I am not seeing anything that suggests otherwise. Except for very late ones perhaps.

Didn't think so.

And that third could turn into a player as well.

Don't believe I ever opposed getting the best return you can. Maybe this wasn't that, but it still has the potential to be good asset management.

Valji surprised he doesn’t get the original MSRP back when he trades in his car.
