Such strong opinions for someone a lot are clearly ignorant about...
We all know what Tyler Toffoli is, and he's not a 75 point guy. This year was clearly the outlier and other teams know that
Sharangovich put up nearly identical numbers to Toffoli in his first 2 NHL seasons, and is a comparable player in that he's big and has an elite shot
Yegor though offers a lot more speed/agility and he uses his size more than Toffoli. He's not a powerforward but he gets involved a lot more than Toffoli who is exclusively a perimeter shooter

Initial thought?
Zero retention is great. That's a full load off the cap, some wiggle room.
Sharangovich is fast, has a wicked shot. Tangible traits we have been crying for. Speed!
He will fit in a fast tempo structure.
The 3rd is nice to have back.
Comparing the trade in which we got Toffoli is stupid. Different GM, different situations.
Ppl saying Conroy got fleeced are crazy.

If things go well and the team enjoys success maybe they even come back around by then.
Conroy needs to stand his ground either way.

If a 73 point player gets you that garbage, might as well hang on to him till the TD.

Draft Pick
|
Lol at everyone saying we got "fleeced" because it is a 3rd round pick instead of a 2nd round pick. Anything outside the first round, even in an "elite" draft, is an educated crap shoot. Besides that, you have no idea if Connie even plans on holding onto the 3rd round pick, or if he will flip it in another deal.
Let's all take a deep breath and calm down haha.

I never try to look at things as just one season but if this trade was made in the 2022 offseason we probably wouldn't have hated it.
Sharangovich was coming off 24 goals and 46 points in 76 games .
Toffoli was coming off 20 goals and 49 points in 74 games.
Over the last three seasons at 5v5:
Toffoli: GP - 208, G-40, P- 84
Sharangovich: GP-205, G-35, P-76
Starting to look a lot closer... and he's 6 years younger.
|
Just wanted to add...if Sharangovich takes toffoli's 268 shots this season he likely has 35 goals and 75pts. We can also sign him to a deal that lasts the life of the rebuild.

The real loser in this deal is Alex Holtz. Toffoli just took his spot.

I don't like this as a hockey trade based on Sharangovich's end in New Jersey. Absolutely could be wrong - as sometimes players do get that fresh start and things work, but putting Toffoli out the door for a reclamation project is rough.
|
Reclamation project is harsh though IMO, he had one down season. Not 3.
Their 5v5 production over the last 3 seasons has been equal, and he's 6 years younger, it's tough to get mad at that IMO.

Probably not but Hanafin and Lindholm are great players on great contracts and you hate to sell low because teams don't want to move draft picks in this draft.

Hopefully this trade isn't a sign of things to come, but it's kind of what I expected. They will be one foot in on a re-tool and one foot in on trying to be competitive now. Hopefully they don't trade Lindholm and Hanifin for a similar type package.

He's easily worth a 2nd. He probably would have been worth a 1st last offseason.
The trade return is okay. It's not amazing, it's not terrible, it's alright.
Sharangovich + 2nd would have been good but this is okay.

I can't wait to see how he gell with Hubey and how many goals he gonna score with Hubey setting him up.

Toffoli's a winner as I can see him having back to back career seasons. That's as good of a landing spot for an offensive winger as there is.

In this day and age, if you as a GM are going to let known or allow players to publicly mention they want a trade or want out, and not instead keep it quiet in house and maybe have them change their mind through the offseason privately, there is no way you can hold onto them until to the trade deadline.
IMO it also weakens the return…but that’s the “open” approach that got him the job one assumes, so have to deal with it and hope that style pays dividends in other ways.
