Not a great start for Connie. I have to think that if you put this trade in NHL23 as NJD and propose it to CGY, your XBox just laughs itself into a smouldering heap.

I’ll await the deep thinkers roasting me on how a 30 point player is a steal for a 30 goal scorer.
Because teams know we are trying to dump him and the market is very limited. He won’t re-sign and we’re not letting him play it out. Flames also don’t want to wait until the deadline. All those limitations affect the flames and the return.

NJ had all the bargaining power here, not the flames.

And I think the team doesn't need to shed cap if every players coming back.

I'm taking that to the bank, younger, cheaper, center goal scorer. I'm happy with that, plus a 3rd.

Ignoring age in that equation.

Sharangovich is 25 with a career high 46 points in 76 games.

Toffoli is 31 with a career high of 73 points in 82 games.

I never try to look at things as just one season but if this trade was made in the 2022 offseason we probably wouldn't have hated it.

Sharangovich was coming off 24 goals and 46 points in 76 games .
Toffoli was coming off 20 goals and 49 points in 74 games.

Over the last three seasons at 5v5:

Toffoli: GP - 208, G-40, P- 84
Sharangovich: GP-205, G-35, P-76

Starting to look a lot closer... and he's 6 years younger.

I like this trade very much. Replaces an older player with a 25 yo 6’2” shooter who can play C. Good job, Conny!

We got bigger, younger, and faster today.

That's a pretty good trade. For New Jersey, considering their position.

Sharangovich is a 3rd liner but they'll bump him up to #2.

Wasn't Sharangovich highly sought after around the league?

Could be a good player here but that pick should be higher. At least a 2nd.

No salary retained.

For those thinking the Flames owners are going to pump $10’s of millions into salary retention haven’t been watching this team.

He doesn't have much negotiating power to speak of. It's not like he will be getting a big multi-year deal.

Conroy will produce many more underwhelming returns. Hey at least Iggy is back right?!

We heard they were looking at younger players or prospects that were close. Why are people surprised that's when they went and did?

I don't know how good Sharangovich will be but he's produced at times and still is young. So they reset the asset clock which is positive. Could they have gotten a late 1st or something? Beats me.

Happy that they are making moves that at least has some eye on the future.

Those thinking that the Flames were actually going to do a full re-build are going to continue to be upset and bash their heads against a wall. As one does.

Well. It sure seems like Toffoli would have got better at the deadline than this. He must have really wanted out.

I just posted in the big thread my thoughts.

Our owners are not down with pissing away real cash to roll the dice on picks and/or prospects.

Their money, they can do what they want with it.

I figured Toffoli would bring back a 2nd and a 3rd so this checks out. For me anyway. Watched the Devils a fair bit. Sharangovich is noticeable. In a good way. Need players to round out the roster, not just kids from the farm. Good deal

Also picking up a RFA coming off a bad year is good when trying to manage your cap.

It's always way easier to like trades getting players that had great years last year but that is more expensive when managing the cap

having the 3rd back means we can offer sheet someone in the $4.5mm to $6.5mm range (1st and 3rd) or go up to $8.5mm (adding our 2nd).

EDIT: swing and miss by me. If i thought this through, it would have been obvious this isn't possible without a time machine, as picks will be used before being allowed to offer sheet someone. Sureloss sorted me out.

He's younger, he hasn't produced away from Jack Hughes well, and he was a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

The Flames traded a career year of Tyler Toffoli for a reclamation project. Sure, it might work - but that's not the value you're looking for on that.

The part that kills me is he may very well come in and score 15-20 goals, and keep us right where we are. This trade doesn't make the team better on the ice today, and I don't think it makes it better tomorrow either. This is a "swing" by Conroy. Time will tell, but man I don't like seeing that type of asset go out on a swing like this for a player who isn't exactly on an upward trajectory. The part that worries me the most is that our professional scouts have not been particularly good - and this seems to be a trade that comes from them.

I don’t know anything about Sharangovich so I’m just gonna hope he’s a good player for us. Good luck to Toff in Jersey. Great guy, very good player. Will always remember this:
