Every insult is the same in this way. You call them something that sort of suits how they're behaving in a targeted attack.
Would I call somebody with down syndrome the r-word? Of course not; that would be horribly insensitive and mean.
The r-word is more general and colloquially just used as a disparaging remark against somebody who is acting like an idiot.
Is it your opinion we should just never insult people? What about if a guy is making an argument in support of Nazis and against a race of people, for example. Can you call him names then?
So I've been on CP for 14 years. If I called you the r-word, do you think I should never be allowed back? Are you so sensitive that a little insult hurts you that much that you'd want severe repercussions for me? Or are you just insulted on behalf of people with mental challenges?
Do you joke around with your friends ever and call each other names? My group chat is nonstop insults, basically. It's so normal to me. And it's not like my group is just trash or something. Bankers, teachers, O&G execs, business owners, etc.

Serious question.
Are you okay with calling non black people the N-word?
Is it okay to call straight people F** or H***?
Is it okay to tell use Jew to insult someone who is being cheap?
I'm going to assume (hope) your answer to all of those is "No", and if that's they case, why are you making the distinction here?
That word was/is meant to be derogatory to developmentally challenged people, especially those with Down Syndrome. That's the association, that's the insult.
You said you're using it to describe someone who is acting like an idiot.
You're insulting someone by saying "You're dumb, you're no better than some kid with down syndrome".
That is what you are saying...full stop.
The association exists whether you admit it or not.
Would it be okay if I said
I would never call a gay person a F**, but it's okay if I call my straight friend that. I just mean "Hey you're acting like a gay person, which is an association I think you should be insulted by
The R word is no different.
Yes of course I joke around with my friends, and I make fun of them.
I used to use words like R***** and F**.
I've grown up, I've developed some empathy, and I realized that even if I'm not directing those words at the people they're really meant to demean and hurt, it is still damaging, and wrong.

Your examples make no sense whatsoever. I'm specifically saying I would never call somebody with actual mental disabilities the r-word. So, no, I would not call a black person the n-word.
I also don't put the r-word in the same category as the n-word.
Here's a question for you for you...do you think people should not use the words dumb, idiot, moron, crazy, or fool in disparaging ways?

Do you feel like language loses a bit of its colour when it gets watered down? Get less authentic? I don't want to sound like a politician dancing around straight forward language that packs a punch.

1) I said would you call a non-black person the N-word.
2) I 100% people can/should use dumb, idiot, moron, crazy or fool in disparaging ways.
Why? Because those are general terms that aren't associated with a specific group as a means to disparage someone.
You want to tell someone they are dumb, or acting stupid, there are dozens of ways of doing that without disparagingly comparing them to another group of people.
If you wanted to call someone cheap would you tell them they are being Jewish?
I assume not. But why?
Jewish isn't even a slur.
It's the association, and the stereotype you are perpetuating that is damaging.

The N word was conceived in hate. The R word was a medical term, just like Sliver says about idiot and moron.
I think it's a great word that has no equal since it became verboten. Just don't use it to demean people with Down's.

1) If it's not so bad why won't you type it out
2) It WAS a medical word that has taken on a whole different meaning. One which is very much derogatory

###### has other meaning than the medical one. It literally means slow. Why can't we use it in that context?

1. I just did. It's filtered.
2. So don't use it in the derogatory sense. Like I said, it has more than one meaning.

You absolutely can.
Flame ######ant? Great, fill your boots.
As an insult that is based on comparing someone to another group to imply they are inferior? Do I really have to explain why that's different?

The n-word wasn't conceived in hate. It used to just mean 'black'.

I'm not talking negro. It's a bastardization of the Latin word with one g.
You might be right though. It doesn't have any non-hateful connotations now though.

Why does it have to be a comparison to that group. Why can't it just mean delayed thinking?

Because it is.
That's the point of the insult whether you want to be honest about it or not.
The argument you're making is akin to
"It's okay. When I call someone a Jew, I don't literally mean they are Jewish. I just mean they are being cheap!"

I think it was used in Scottish with the n-word pronunciation long before it ever took on the hateful connotation.
I wouldn't be surprised if part of its development over time as a slur actually had to do with the socioeconomic standing of the Scots and of Scottish language.

I don't see a connection at all. If I say that's ######ed thinking it should mean delayed with no connection to any person or group.
I should say I love people with Down's. They don't deserve to be demeaned in any way. I just think we should be able to use the other definitions without doing that.

This might be the most ######ed comparison I've seen so far.

Are we really all that surprised that Sliver got banned from Reddit?
I'm not going to pretend that the R word was the sole reason he got the boot. Its very likely he was warned before from trolling.
The stuff he gets away with here on CP would never fly in other message boards
