Over the last couple years very few trades get made after July 1st.
This week tends to be your best shot to make a trade before the deadline. Especially with how tight teams are to the cap.
Unless maybe the Flames are looking for Money In, Money out "hockey trades" which would also be a mistake IMO.

and importantly, if this team is trying to compete now (…hockey gods help us), you have to build the majority of your team in the next 7 days.
Having such significant parts of your roster stand unresolved makes little sense.
…unless your intention is to just run it back…

These are all artificial deadlines. If the team isn't competitive and they aren't traded by the deadline, then it is time to worry.

The problem here is these players have indicated they likely don't want to stay.
Going into the season, making the playoffs as a wild card, and the losing in round one and letting these guys walk would also be a mistake.
It's a mistake whether the team is competitive or not.

No no, don’t worry. Even if they’re not traded at the deadline, there’s still time to sign them before free agency. It’ll be fine. Surely if they’re still here, it means they want to re-sign.

And no worries even then, still time to re-sign them after July 1, 2024.

Hey Sec, any word if things are more likely to go down tomorrow at the draft rather than today?

Flames could be in a group of teams working to obtain a playoff spot. Its way to easy to not trade the asset,
Flames don't have the depth to keep on that path, losing an asset to UFA.
In my view, they need to move 2 of them before July 1st.
Lindholm is likely the toughest trade, that might take awhile.
However it should occur in the summer IMO

Most of the players want to stay but want more term and or money than is being offered
Anyway I am not saying don't trade anyone I am saying don't make a bad deal just to "do something"
These guys are all in contract years...they are gonna ball out this season

That'd certainly mark an actual rebuild...but I just don't see it.

Some pretty significant ones were made after draft day last year: Brent Burns to Hurricanes, Zacha/Haula trade, Pacioretty, Petry, Marino, Bjorkstrand, Hill, Kulikov, some guy named Tkachuk.
The year before, after draft day: Nate Schmidt, MAF, Tyler Johnson, Vladar, Zadorov, Dadonov, Reaves, Dvorak.
2019: Burakovsky, Roy, Hartman, Soderberg, Kadri, Ceci, Lucic/Neal, Jokiharju, Vesey.

I agree that you can't just give guys away, but you need to be aggressive and assertive in shopping these players. And just my own opinion is it feels like the Flames are still being passive and responsive here.
My worry is they are paralyzed on moving Hanifin, Toffoli, and Backlund due to the Lindholm situation.
I worry that if they know Lindholm is gone they then maybe they are open to futures trades, but if Lindholm stays they want to make more hockey trades to stay competitive.
When what they should be doing is making futures trades for picks and prospects either way. And then if you do want to remain competitive use those assets to try to acquire players because it's easier than making hockey trades, or bring in players that are more cap dumps but still good players.
Maybe with a more clear direction (like St.Louis had at the deadline) you could have brought in a Hall or Hayes for no real acquisition cost.
Especially with the league so cash strapped.

Agreed, but I still get strong vibes from you that you're on team "just get in" and want to roll with aging vets that aren't keen on being here and that's mildly disappointing.
I hope you see the light (aka a rebuild) soon.
You don't have to pretend you're happy with the status quo any more, man. Mediocrity sucks. Let's shoot for better.
