I think part of it is that whole rule about only being able to sign 8 year extensions with the current team didn't always exist. There was no real need to make it a sign and trade. It used to be that the team acquiring the player would just be given permission to talk about a contract with the player before the trade was made to get a deal in principle, then the acquiring team would sign the player right after the trade.
It also only makes sense in relatively rare cases where the team wants to sign the player for 8 years. One smaller factor is that almost all new contracts come with some kind of NMC which prevents players from getting blindsided right after signing. Most teams would never do that, but it has happened in other leagues where NMCs are more rare.
Good points, but I think the 8-year thing came in with the 2013 CBA. So it still took almost a decade for anyone to figure it out, which is wild to me.
I think if you’re a high end player in position for an extremely lucrative extension, you’re certainly open to signing now opposed to a year from now.
Yeah. The last set of guys who bet on themselves failed pretty bad in Klingberg and Hall. Huberdeau gets a 2 million discount if he signs this offseason. Gaudreau didn’t get run over with the offers he expected. Skinner was majorly overpaid etc

How can you not smile watching those 2 on interviews.
I really hope their tenure in management works out here, because I like them too much to turn sour on them.
Loved Iggy's takes, his interviews are always so good. The mix of seriousness but some fun and laughs mixed in is so refreshing. Not the cliche garbage that you hear all the time, I'm hopeful our management team is shaping up quite well.

Smaller scale: Glencross seriously misjudged his value.
