I think Backs thinks it’s probably best for both him and the Flames that he moves on, he was the deserving successor of the Captaincy after Gio and it’s unfortunate Sutter\Treliving didn’t make that decision but it’s time to let him try it somewhere else, making him captain now doesn’t make sense for either party nor does paying him at an AAV that’s north of a ‘hometown’ discount.

I can’t think of a better time than after winning a deserving NHL King Clancy award for being a great leader on and most importantly off the ice and also putting up career numbers in a tough year with Calgary after its two biggest stars of near a decade jetted.

Flames need to deal him to a good spot and I think they should full retain on Backs to help the big contenders make a play for him.

Backs is going to Tampa/Carolina/Florida/ (maybe Boston) after this year. Those are teams that value his skillset and he gets a chance to win.
