How is that a regulation, versus an observation?

Which is an easy decision to make now, yeas in the future. At the time NO ONE was saying Monahan should be exposed.
It's an idiotic argument.

The GMs make big bucks to make those calls. Some are proactive, and some, like Treliving, are reactive.
But thanks for the insult. Just cause you have your opinions doesn't make them right either.

I think the main point is that its easy to decide the best move years after the fact. If it wasn't a consideration for anyone at the time then its a pointless discussion.

No one was trading for Gio - they all had their own protection list for Seattle and weren't adding another Dman to protect, especially an old one coming off a bad year and carrying a $6.7M cap hit.
And no GM would replace one of these guys for Monahan on the exposed list:
Milan Lucic, Derek Ryan, Josh Leivo, Matthew Phillips, Byron Froese, Glenn Gawdin, Zac Rinaldo, Justin Kirkland, Brett Ritchie, Buddy Robinson and Dominik Simon

So if the Flames trade:
Lindholm
Hanifin
Toffoli
Backlund
Maybe more?
What's the 2024 draft look like at the top end?
Because a team with those players gone probably drafts pretty high.

2024 looks good and 2025/26 has some gems as well:
2024:
Macklin Celebrini
Cole Eiserman
Aron Kiviharju
Ivan Demidov
Berkly Catton
2025/26:
Michael Misa
Gavin McKenna (Bedards cousin)
Ryan Roobroeck

Some of us have been off the Monahan bandwagon for a while. I don’t think people should assume everyone thinks how they think. Some on here believe that just because they weren’t thinking it, it automatically becomes hindsight.

Based on the information at the time, no one with any credibility was talking about exposing Monahan. He as still considered to be a core piece.

Well, then, they were wrong, credibility or not. And it cost the Flames big time. Unfortunately, those with credibility didn't lose any in your eyes despite the debacle.

Losing Gio for nothing is honestly on the bottom of the list of things I think the Flames did wrong to get to their current spot

Keeping Monahan didn't cost the Flames big time. It was the ensuing trade to dump him years later that did if anything.

It's unfair to judgement decisions based on what is known now. You have to assess if the decisions were sound based on the information one had at the time.
I'm less interesting in right/wrong. More about if a decision was a good one or not based on what was known at the time.

They are two separate things though. Keeping Monahan at the expansion draft was the right choice at the time. Paying to dump him later not so much but Treliving also could have just rode out his contract and not signed Kadri. UFAs and coaches were his weak points by far.

This thread kind of sucks. Re-litigating exposing Gio? Who really cares anymore.

Burn it to the ground. Pick 4 times in the first round this year.
Take on bad money for even more picks.

I wish so badly that this would happen, but I just don't see them pulling it off. The players they have aren't good enough for a bunch of 1st rounders in this draft.

I am getting antsy, I'd love to see a trade today.
