What?

Flyers would have been competitive if not for the horrific injuries they had last year.

Was it a 2.9 AAV?

I would not mind Backlund on that deal.

Yeah, the Flyers’ management hasn’t been great the last few years, but few teams in the NHL can sustain full-season injuries to their #1C and #1D.

According to LeBrun the snag is the NHL believes this trade circumvents their retained salary rules:

Quote:
The Hurricanes and Flyers were in agreement in principle on Tony DeAngelo going to Carolina for a prospect and Philadelphia retaining 50 percent of his remaining $5 million salary and cap hit for next season. But my understanding is that the NHL took issue with DeAngelo going back to Carolina within a year of his trade from the Hurricanes. There’s language in the CBA about a player returning within 12 months, especially on a retained salary, as being possible circumvention.

I believe both the Flyers and Hurricanes have argued with the league about this, saying: 1) His contract wasn’t even signed with Carolina; it was Philadelphia that signed him last summer to a two-year, $10 million deal. And 2) Chuck Fletcher was the GM who traded for DeAngelo and signed him, and he’s no longer there — so how could any of this be a circumvention?
So unless the NHL changes their mind this trade may have to wait until July 9.

Seems like an unnecessary fight if you just have to wait 2 weeks for the trade to go through. Not like they are playing games this week.

I can see why it's an issue. The fact the original GM is gone is not relevant, as I assume other members of the management team are there.

The fact that the Phillies signed him is also irrelevant as that could have been the plan all along.

Now, I don't think this was a deliberate attempt at circumvention but it does bear some scrutiny.

But since it will be fine in a few weeks, not a big deal.

Exactly
The only possible way this could be a problem is if the flyers want the prospect or the hurricanes want the player for another transaction before then.

If I were the Flyers I would be nervous the Canes could potentially pull out of the trade.

If the Canes have another trade or free agent signing fall in their laps before July 8th, the Flyers would be either stuck with DeAngelo or would have to find another team to take him on. Which could cost the Flyers assets.

Hard to find better value if you're Carolina. DeAngelo has has character flaws, but he brings more than what he gets paid in point production, especially if he's in Carolina. Might take a slight drop in production with Burns there though.

Well, we're not in the 30s. I guess we got that.

Ah being a Flames fan. You always know where you're going and exactly how you're going to get there.

Expensive, old, and a deep seeded desire to stay exactly that.

League should use some common sense and allow it, just like they let us re sign Stone once we bought him out and had an injury the next day to our blue line and let us sign him at a lower value.

A rule is a rule and you must enforce the rule, unless it involves the Oilers.
