Sid likes him, maybe the Pens move for him with salary retained.

We should be retaining 50% on every player with a year left to maximize the return.

You can only retain on a set number of contracts.

Exactly.
Conroy’s been an AGM in this organization, no less, for a long time. I was always a little hesitant to replace Treliving because it is not all that uncommon for a new GM to come in and say ‘well, we have to see what we have here’ then go on to sit still for months.
Conroy has to hit the ground running here and he should know better than anyone what he has.

3.
At the moment the Flames have no retained salaries.
The value of Lindholm and Hanifin at 50% retained in a year where the cap is only going up $1M, should be very attractive to several teams.

Toffoli at $2.125M cap hit coming off a 34 goal / 73 point season would fetch a king's ransom.

Even at 3 contracts, this is the best idea I’ve heard in a while

Unfortunately, we don't know how much that means Conroy has been involved in formulating and negotiating transactions. Didn't he (Conroy) also say that Treliving did most of the trade dealing on his own?

We need 1sts. That’s the bottom line. So if it requires retaining salary so be it.

It's only 1 year of retention anyway and we are making space ourselves.
I'm excited being forced into a rebuild and not have the Sutter cloud hanging over the organization anymore our future is bright if we go about it the right way

Hold your horses on the forced rebuild. I think Lindholm at 9+ and a re-tool scenario is still in the cards

It is the Flames, of course it is. I won't believe otherwise until Lindholm is traded lol.

Hopefully they can resign Lindholm. He would be a big loss.
Losing Hanifin probably gets absorbed a bit by Stecher and Gilbert. Flames have a surplus on D. Especially if Kylington comes back and can still play.
Tofoli leaving opens up a spot for Coronato
Backlund leaving might open up a C spot for Dube.
The flames have a fairly old and expensive team for what the actually produce. They don’t really have any players that can dominate games. The more I think about it the less worried I am about the potential exodus. Having said that I do think Lindholm would be a loss.
Either way though. The Flames have to get younger and cheaper. I think that’s about to happen.

The 13th overall doesn't seem like a slam dunk return to me. Hanifin was a top 5 pick himself, is now a top pairing or at worst #3 guy. Picks in the teens routinely bust.
Would rather re-enact the Hamilton trade where we traded one top pairing defender for a guy in his early 20s already playing top 4, with potential to become a top pairing guy, which Hanifin did. The pick is a bigger gamble.

Conroy will have some good people that will help when decisions are made on these trades. In the end this summer will define Conroy as a GM.
