No thanks
Don’t give him away but trade him for as much as you can.
With or without Lindholm, the Flames are not contending for awhile
|
The Flames are likely going to attempt to contend next year. if Lindholm is moved, then the organization is bringing in another centre.
If the Flames can hedge the bets and trade aging players for 23ish year old players that are still developing, that's likely the best route. Not a true rebuild, but just solid asset management. Under the new cap system, solid asset management likely trumps scorched earth rebuild anyways.
The dream would be players like Lundell. Maybe Florida's success has them so convinced that they are in win now mode that they trade a future #1 centre. Could be the ultimate silver lining to the Tkachuk ordeal.

How do they contend if nobody wants to come back.
Honestly, the seven UFAs, if they have any affinity for this city and the fans they’ve played in front of the last 1-15 years, need to hold the line and say as one “trade me right ####ing now”.
Do it for us.
Please.

Yes, they will.
No Lindholm, no Backlund means all the heavy lifting is done by Kadri and Dube.
Or are they gonna throw big money at Max Domi.
No Toffoli = no trigger man on a forward group that already doesn’t have one.
Losing Hanifin makes them a worse blue line.
Drafting 6-10th is just a start.
Then sell some more pieces.
Draft 1-5th.
Sell some more pieces.
Draft 1-5th.
Just for good measure, sell some more pieces.
Draft 1-10th.
Aim to make at least six 1st round selections over the next 3 years.
Aim to make at least six 2nd round selections over the next 2 years.
Don’t sign any UFAs longer than 4 years during this time.
Don’t lie to us. The team three hours north has the two best players in the world.
Don’t tell us you have a better idea than that - “I know better” just got pancaked at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
Do this right.
Make a plan, stick with it, don’t cut corners, and just do what the Blackhawks, Lightning, Penguins, Avalanche, Kings, and Capitals all did, and build the best team you can around players YOU drafted at the top of the board.
We, and I do mean we, just gave you a $1.2B arena project.
Give us a properly built hockey team to watch when it’s done.
You ####ing owe us better than this.

They're going re-tool, not re-build. No scorched Earth. As long as the goal by ownership is to contend for a playoff spot every year that's what is going to happen.
They can re-sign Lindholm and still trade others for a mix of players/picks/prospects coming back the other way. It's going to be a bit of a tough job but Conroy can help re-stock the prospect cupboard, get younger, and still be very competitive next year. I think that's the plan. And I'm pretty excited, after a pretty ugly season last year I'm pumped to see what team Conroy can put on the ice in October.

So just more half measures. Ensuring the team is neither competitive now nor building a competitive future.
Sounds great.

Literally not what I said.
They can be a competitive team next season, and they will be. So many things went wrong last season and they barely missed the playoffs. Better years from Huberdeau and Markstrom are pretty much a given. Pretty easy for improvements from the PP, OT and 3 on 3 records, as well as other individual players. Even if they tried to tank next year they couldn't, there's too many good pieces.
They will be competitive next season and I believe Conroy will replenish some of the picks and prospects the organization needs in the process. Having a guy like Toffoli being traded at arguably the peak of his career is a blessing in disguise. Sell high. Things aren't that bleak. Unless you're that kind of person, but I'm not. The team will be more than likely be younger and faster next season, exactly what I want to see. Going to be a fun summer.

Huberdeau probably
Markstrom is not a given. It’s less than 50% if I have to bet

Steinberg said yesterday on The Fan that he believes the Flames are willing to do futures based trades for these guys. I have faith

The difference in his play before and after his wife gave birth last season was quite stark. It was obviously weighing on him. He was very good down the stretch. He'll be fine.

The Flames brought in Feaster to take the bullet and stumble into a rebuild. If they think they can compete for a playoff spot they will. If Lindholm doesn’t sign then I believe Conroy but if Lindholm stays then no rebuild trades

He was good for the few games post birth and very average after
He’s an aging goalie who’s streaky . I think there’s a 30% chance he bounces back and 70% chance the Oilers broke his brain

So looking at this from a half and half perspective. Conny moves Hanifin, Toffoli and Backlund.
Signs Lindholm.
Their roster spots logically get eaten up by Coronato, Zary and Kylington if they plan on filling them from within.
Thatll clear (without doing matth or retention in trades) roughly 8-12 million when factoring the contracts slotting in.
Thats enough cap flex to move other UFAs for a haul at the deadline and eat some garbage contracts for a better selection of picks.
Or to go out there and get something else.
I mean, it's a tight rope re-tool. That's still 3 top players out the door.
I mean it's not a total rebuild but it'll clear some years off of the age overage of the roster.
Plus you're walking 3 ufas to the deadline instead of 7. And I think you could move 2 of them at the deadline and sign the 3rd. Depending on how the season goes of course.

I'm sorry but I just don't understand this plan. If we admit that the team will likely be worse next year (on paper at the very least) because we have players wanting out and draft picks that need replenishing - why not just do it right? Why go half way in with one foot already out the door?
So be worse on paper next season, maybe make the playoffs with some better luck (and if not draft 12-16 again), but the team still has no true stars under the age of 28 - and unless we win the lottery one year, we have to hope we get lucky and draft another Gaudreau in the 4th round?
How is this fun?
This is the way this organization has operated for the last 20 years and it's gotten among the worst results in the league. Fans shouldn't be accepting this path. Fans should be demanding change.
We don't need one or two or three moves. We need massive moves to change the direction of this franchise. They don't need to be made all at once, but the very worst thing I could possibly see as a fan is half measures: a move one day followed by a move in the opposite direction the next.

He was okay at best down the stretch. .915 in April with a 5 game sample size but .898 in March and with 14 games.

Because the people that own the team don't want to tear it down. If the wish of ownership is to ice a competitive team that (hopefully) makes the playoffs that's what's going to happen. Doesn't matter what you, me, or CP as collective wants. It just doesn't matter.

Better to review this question after the summer. We have no idea what this team will look like in October yet. No idea what trades will be made, or what they will bring back.
Because it's a game. And last year kinda sucked. New coaching staff, new players, new chemistry, new season. How is it not fun? This is great. We have so much to look forward to over the next few months, I love it.

Sure. To each their own. Not sure how you go about doing that, but I'm just a fan in B.C. who watches them on TV and chats about them with a bunch of strangers on the internet. I really don't have any say. Just going to watch what happens and keep cheering like I have for about 35 years. It's a game.

I guess cheering for a team that has no intention to actually win a championship will get old for me. Not much else to add if we just view it differently. I want to build an attachment to this team and this franchise has made it difficult for me.
