OK now I understand it even less.
According to Windows:
Total C:\ space: 52GB
Free C:\ space: 4,35GB
According to Windirstat:
C:\ 22,1GB which can be about right as a total space used. So why the heck Win says I only have 4GB free? The damn thing is 50GB big.

I did, fragmentation is not the problem, neither is cluster size (4kB)...

XP generally uses NTFS so fragmenting probably isn't the issue, but I wondered if perhaps running the defragment program my discover any misplaced pointers the would screw up Windows calculations.
You could always try to run something like CCleaner

OK so I ran CCleaner, removed some junk but the problem still remains... What about those misplaced pointers anyways?

It would have already been identified with the stuff you have done. You see it when you do "Error Checking" on the drive, but with the stuff you have done it would have already identified any issues.

have you checked with the 'hidden' folders too?
also, things like the windows update files, system restore files are hidden, but they are part of that number too

This nifty Windows tool: SequoiaView can visually represent what is eating up your drive space.
Takes a while to scan the whole drive. Rough guess is about 20 minutes.

Hey guys I have a Question Im hoping you can help me fix.
I have a compaq laptop. It's just under 1yr old. It is a 1.66 ghz. 80 gig HD etc..
The problem I have is that the cdrom doesnt show up/work. It's a dvd player/burner. This has been going on for a while now, but I've been so busy with school that I havent had the time to look into fixing it. + I don't really have a need to use it all that often.
Sometimes the cdrom will show up every so often. However I havent used it when it has.
Over the course of the year or whatever, I've used the cdrom 2-3 times probably. For sure less than 5 times.

Hey, how do I go about downloading a photo stored on my computer to a forum such as this one? I believe that I have to first download it to a website for photo storage then post it somehow? Is that correct? I want to be able to show the photo in a post. thanks.

How is it encoded? (what is the extension?)
For quick and dirty, you may be able to use Windows Movie Maker. To get more in depth DScaler can be used.
