I am sure Treliving held some of these guys on last year with the promise of playoffs.
He also held agents and media from any unrest guys had either last offseason or this offseason.

Conroy seems not able to convince the players to stay, nor (and this is more important, for future dealings) quell this sort of thing from coming out from agents and or the media, weakling his position to some degree.

Time to rebuild/retool/re whatever you wanna call it.

Some of the pieces in this room don't want to be here. It's probably a big reason why the team performed so poorly last year. This team will be much better in the long run with players that want to be here.

Even if this team takes a step back talent and experience wise, they can still be competitive next season. Will they be a favorite to make the playoffs? No, but we've seen crazier things happen. There's still some really good players signed to this team beyond next season and there's some interesting youth around this roster as well. You never know who will shine when given the opportunity to step into a bigger role.

Maybe the team takes a step back next season. I mean, it's likely the team takes a step back next season, but this team isn't starting from square 1. I think this organization has a lot of the right pieces to be competitive within the next few seasons. Besides, is it even a step back to go from missing the playoffs and picking 16 to missing the playoffs and picking top 10? What if they pick top 5? top 3? That's a pretty big player to build around with whatever they can get their hands on this off season.

If these guys don't want to be here then that's fine. I want to watch players that want to be here. That want to win here.

Hopefully if they actually rebuild, it coincides perfectly with Dry Saddle and McLottoBall leaving Edmonton

I doubt very much Conroy wants to keep any of them, in his heart of hearts.

And the bargaining position isn’t weakened because of this - everyone else can access capfriendly and see who’s gonna be available July 1.

The time we have dreamed of is at hand.

This is lining up to be a very advantageous situation for the Flames and in many ways I hope a perfect storm is lining up for Conroy. This has to be one of the weakest free agent classes in a long time, this happens to be a draft hyped as one of the best in a generation, you have a cap that is almost certainly rising significantly next year, and 3 of the assets you are moving have a cap hit of less than $5M. Lindholm and Toffoli have zero trade protection while Hanifin only has a 8 team no go list. Backlund has a 10 team trade list so you move him if it makes sense but the least amount of urgency of the 4 is with him. With the rising cap most teams should feel confident they will have the space to re-sign the player we are sending.

This really lines up for Conroy to get some good returns for these guys. I am happy they are forced to blow this team up and really ring in the new era of the Flames

There is a chance our 2025 pick if between 2-10 goes to Montreal. That kind of frightening.

We need Florida to not have a bottom ten pick in 2024

So Conroy gets thrown into the deep end and will have to make his mark as a GM very early.

Unfortunately, if he's making trades for futures, he might end up gone before the fruits of those trades every fully ripen. Hopefully not.

I think it's getting fun now.
Hope the team doesn't rush, but don't miss a good opportunity.
Plan 3 years rebuild.
Trade 5 UFAs plus Vladar this year, and trade Tanev, Coleman during trade deadline.
Try to trade Kadri, there is should have some interest as FA pool is not good.
Try to trade Weegar to Ottowa, Huberdeau to Montreal and Markstrom to whereever in 2 years.
And there are will be some Okay veteran players without contact this season.
Fill the roster with our prospects plus a couple of 1 year veterans and trade them during deadline.

Time to trade for a second 25 first round pick.

I wish they’d have moved Toffoli at last season’s deadline. We likely would have gotten a solid picks in this year’s draft from teams looking to load up.

Reading the conditions doesn’t it push to 2026 and we give an extra third if we’re in the bottom 10 every year ?

I don’t think there is any chance it goes to Montreal . Am I mistaken?

Edit - only if first overall not top 10 .

True. There is definite potential for a home run at the draft. I worry that all the other GMs will be smart enough to know that Conroy will now have no choice but to move these guys and he will be “desperate” to move them after the draft if no one steps up with good enough offers at the draft. Teams are going to try to take advantage of Conroy in these circumstances.

Would really love for Conroy to surprise everyone and just hit a home run at the draft… something like moving Lindholm, Backlund, Hanifin, and Toffoli at the draft for first round picks. Get the eastern teams bidding against each other for these bargain contracts and end up picking 4 times in the first round. It would be a huge 180 for this team. All of a sudden having one of the deepest prospect pools in the league after a single draft.

Then sign some monsters in free agency to one year deals… let the kids score goals and learn the league while the goons punish teams. Reclaim the old “hardest working team in the league” mantle… even if they lose games, just make sure the other teams feel the pain of playing them the next day.

I totally agree, but because it feels so obvious of what to do from the outside, I doubt we see it come to fruition.

How I read it is if the flyers don’t get Floridas 2024, then we don’t get their 2025. And our 2025 is only number one protected.

If we get Floridas 2025, that’s what Montreal gets.

So we can’t have Florida finish bottom ten this year.

I would imagine this will get quite a bit "worse" before it gets "better".

Initially I felt very disappointed by Treliving moving on. Today I feel relieved. Not all of this was his doing, but I think he made some significant mistakes in constructing this team.
