Lol Conny's first month is going to be as if someone started with the flames on franchise mode in NHL23. Hopefully he can get some value for these guys.

I imagine lots of 24 1sts.

yeah i agree hate to say it but think he is going to have a hard time getting 23 1sts this close to the draft, everyone falls in love with prospects in the weeks before the draft and it is particularly strong

Could be wrong but feels like the flames are about to be a team with loads of cap room too
Tanev and Zadorov should get a solid return at the trade deadline if healthy.

Didn't the Canucks get Horvat via the Schneider trade?

Didn't NJ do one as well recently?

Jordan Stall for a high pick IIRC.

Those were all good drafts.

A lot say this is a bad hand to be dealt by a new GM. This is a GIFT.

That's the gamble - I do think he will be worth more at the deadline, but he may also be injured. Do you risk waiting until then?

As for re-signing him - Calgary will have cap room. if he is willing to go year-to-year, I would be hoping that he re-signs then year to year. However, he takes all the risk in that scenario. I would imagine he would want another 4 year deal - maybe 5 years if he can find a team to give him that. I can't imagine he would be ok going year to year, or even a 2 year deal. At any time, that may be the last contract he signs.

Haha Wills talking about keeping Backlund and Toffoli into next season to try to make the playoffs and, and I quote, "make noise"

What a ####ing dunce.

He's even duller than I thought.

With burning it down we should be able to get some serious value if we retain salary on a couple of them.

Lindholm + Hanifin for 4m cap. Who's going for it that has some assets?

I'd like to scoff at the possibility but I feel like that was the Flames playbook for many years before the Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk era, desperately chase two home playoff dates every year at all costs and asset management be damned. Hopefully things are different now

Tin Foil Hat Time: Could it possibly be that Conroy is purposefully lowballing the upcoming UFAs in order to force ownership to accept a rebuild?

Sounds like a fire sale - man, this should've happened last season when the Bedard Sweepstakes was in effect. This entry draft in July still can be very interesting if Flames can move up to top 5 if possible. Get those blockbuster moves going Conny!

An absolute gift. This is the most excited I've been for the direction of our franchise in years. Conroy probably wanted to do this but knew he couldn't do a proper rebuild under Edwards.

Now....."Sorry Murray, here's what I've inherited".

On the plus side, this should entice Phillips to want to come back with a big hole on RW….right?

Toffoli I don't know - but it is probably a little bit from column A, and a little bit from column B. I am sure eventually more things will get leaked. For now, it seems to be purely a mix of question marks about the Flames competing, and players wanting to cash-in next season.
Yeah, one thing that is being left out is that it isn't a bunch players demanding a trade. It's Conroy (and i imagine ownership) deciding no more walking guys into UFA for nothing. The expectation now is on the last year of your deal, we want to know if we should be shopping you or signing you. If he can't find deals, it's not like half the team won't be showing up at camp. The teams position is "No More Johnny's", and I am sure the players position is pretty much the opposite, which is we are on contract until such and such date and that's all I am committing to. And we know teams and agents use the media to move things in their favor, this is likely the same. The players want to cause a bit of an exodus panic to maybe bump up their offers by a bit. Not to mention, with how things appeared to go with Sutter, they are probably wary of locking in long term until they see changes.

Wills is the most stubborn, short sighted hockey personality out there.
