Nothing more on any of this than what we've had up to this week, so just trying to put the pieces together.
As of now we've heard from Backlund (and his agent) that he wants to win the Stanley Cup and will wait to see what this team does. I don't think the Flames commit to Backlund if they end up extending Lindholm at $8M+
Speaking of Lindholm, Friedman suggests everything runs through his decision and that feels accurate. Also said Lindholm is willing to see young players added to the team but wouldn't want to be part of a complete rebuild. I don't think thats happening at all, even if they lose Hanifin. If he (Lindholm) signs, they'll still be trying to contend even if they end up with picks and not players back in any other deal.

Those seem like pretty reasonable expectations for those 3, if they were a line. Plus you get a return for trading Toffoli, plus the cap savings
|
Handing a top-line roster spot to a guy with 1 NHL game under his belt is a bold strategy. I doubt veterans like Mangiapane and Dube would be very happy about that.
I’m going to assume Corronato starts the season in the AHL and plays at least a half a season there, like the overwhelming majority of prospects with his pedigree.

Curious to peoples thoughts.
If the Flames had the chance to acquire either Lafreniere or Shane Wright in a deal who would you rather they acquire? Assuming we can only acquire 1 of the 2 so saying both is not an answer however neither would be acceptable.
I would prefer Wright by a small margin.

I think that Conroy probably gets 1 chance at a rebuild, and he doesn't need to take that chance this summer by necessity, and that this being a largely refurbished team last year they had a bad year but did not prove they couldn't be a good team they just showed that last year was not working.
Not going to happen, but I would like to see;
Dump Markstrom for anything up to neutral value. See if the Wolf actually has it.
Spend max$3M on max 1F & 1D, all other contracts need to be 2way.
Hopefully Get Kylington back into the lineup.
Let the Prospects backfill the other 3 roster spots
Then wait until Christmas.
If you are firmly in a division playoff spot, great this team lived up to it's expectations from a year ago, and proceed as though last year didn't happen for the most part. Conroy saves his rebuild card for another time, and we see what this group can do, you probably have enough cap space from the Markstrom savings to add a scoring winger for the run.
This will be the hardest part, if you are a wild card, or worse. Sell hard. Be honest with Lindholm, Toffoli, Mangiapane, Backlund, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov. "We understand last season had a lot to do with coaching and inconsistent goaltending, we've made changes and want to give you guys another chance here, but if it's not working out we want to give you a chance to win somewhere else this year". I think those 7 guys can get you somewhere in the range of 2-3 firsts, 2-3 seconds, 2-3 other picks and 2-3 prospects at the dead line, plus the $34M in cap space they open up, all of that in 1 offseason would be a great way to start off a rebuild.
You give Rasmus the C, you tell him and Weeger, rebuild or not they are the core of the team going forward.
Huberdeau, Kadri and Coleman have contracts that aren't all that moveable mid seasons. So I think you hold onto those 3, see if they can rebuild some value vs their contract to move later, and worry about dumping them in ~3 years if you need to give a big raise to some guys coming off ELCs.
A lot of the problem I see with sports management, is they always want to head in a defined direction when sometimes you need to be prepared to move in 2 directions at once. Lots of things could go wrong but, I don't know why you would pull the trigger on a rebuild in the next week, when you largely have what looks like a balanced and strong NHL roster on paper, that struggled with a coach who was dismissed and you can give them a second look and get just about the same price to burn it down in 7 months.

Wright and it’s not even close.
This is the list of 1st overall picks from the last 30 years that have scored less than Lafreniere after 3 seasons:
Yakupov
Fleury
Dipietro
Stefan
Phillips
Jovanoski.
That’s it. 2 defenseman, 2 goalies, and 2 of the biggest busts of all time.

A Kadri that scores 60 pts and plays his tenacious style is worth 7M.
|
Exactly. Everything that could have went wrong, went wrong and yes he appeared to not handle it well under Sutter as the season went on. But Kadri's stock in the eyes of many on CP has fallen to comical levels at this point.
Yes, 7X7 was likely a mistake by Treliving, but he's also not some anchor, past his prime player that adds nothing and needs to be bought out/shipped out with retention/draft picks. Under a new coach, full off season he'll likely be back to a goal scoring, feisty top 6 forward and the sky won't be falling at having him on the team.

For whatever reason I'm listening to Allvin (Canucks GM) talk to the media right now...and then looking at that roster, and their prospect pool...that organization is !@#$ed. I'd be hard pressed to better identify a team more confused/detached from reality.

I'm thankful Winnipeg exists so we're not the least desirable city to play in, and that Vancouver exists to be as larger gong show with a worse owner.

That's not the point. The point is that Toffoli's offense is absolutely replaceable - whoever plays with Huberdeau and Lindholm will see a bump in production. And Huberdeau will see a bump in production as well - possibly Lindholm too.
Even having a rookie like Coronato playing with them, could easily result in the 3 replacing what we got from Hubs, Lindy and Toff last year (that was what I meant).
Also, I doubt Coronato starts in the A - unless it's for a handful of games only. And no, other players wouldn't be upset if he were on that line.

Coronato will be 3 year removed from his draft class next season
Here is a list of 2020 draft picks who scored 20 goals last season
Tim Stutzle
Dawson Mercer
Here is a list of 2019 draft picks who scored 20 goals in a season by year 3 post draft
Jack Hughes
Trevor Zegras
Cole Caufield
It doesn't happen very often, and most of the players (all?) listed above were much higher regarded prospects
While it would be amazing for him to step in and get 20 goals, it is highly unlikely

You're right.
It a great strategy for their captain to miss the entire 22-23 season, and the entire 23-24 season, to be able to sneak him into the playoffs for the 2024 playoffs.
Genius by the Avs!

True it is unlikely...but if I had to pick a player that I thought was most similar to Coronato that debuted in the NHL recently it would be Caufield.
Draft+0: 48 Goals in 51 games (USHL) vs 29 goals in 28 games (USHL)
Draft+1: 18 Goals in 34 games (NCAA) vs 19 Goals in 36 games (USHL)
Draft+2: 20 Goals in 34 games (NCAA) vs 30 Goals in 31 games (NCAA)
So a difference in their Draft+2 season...but it was also the weird COVID season for Caufield and Coronato was asked to play more C in his Draft+2 which deflated his production a little.
I think with top 6 minutes Coronato could go 20+20 as a rookie. Leafs didn't seem to have any issue throwing Knies into a top 6 role in the playoffs and he looked good for them.

Isn't Landesjog getting a hip replacement or something? I would be surprised if that guy ever plays again.
