I think "Raise the Titanic" was prior too, as it showed the ship fully intact and not broken in two.

I'm still shocked that they don't have a "we're f'd" buoy on that thing.
I guess because they don't have a inertial navigation system on that stupid thing, which seems like a bizarre cost cutting measure.
Most submarines going back to the 50's could calculate their grid location and depth fairly accurately without a GPS. I mean during the cold war they used lead weights, stop watches and pencils and could be within a few hundred feet of their exact location.
that's the bizarre part to me, I'm sure a cellphone could provide those calculations.
I fully expect that this company is going to be non existent by the time the lawsuits happen.

1983 "Terror on the Titanic"
Superfriends
During a diving exploration on the Titanic wreck two divers were attacked by algae monsters caused by a mutation from the ship's wreckage when it sank. When Aquaman and Black Vulcan was sent over, the algae monsters turn the Titanic into a living monster that eats boats and went on a rampage on Newfondland. The Titanic-monster was defeated by Aquaman and Black Vulcan when they tricked it into crashing into a iceberg and made it sank again as a result.

I guess if I had an extra quarter million dollars burning a hole in my pocket there could be dumber things to spend it on than a trip aboard the finest death trap one can cobble together between trips to A Sharper Image and Home Depot. Not many things but probably something. What an expensive and idiotic way to die.

I was in Chania, Greece last month and we went on one of those 40 min boat excursions that has the glass bottom that goes meter or 2 under water so you can see all the fish, corrals, garbage, etc that is underwater. Literally this boat:
That thing was a nightmare with about 12 people crammed in, no room to stand up straight, the stench of sweaty humans, and definitely a feeling of claustrophobia. The photo makes it look more spacious than it was, and I'm not a big guy. Most of the time I spent thinking how would we leave this damn thing in an orderly fashion if the glass broke and we had to get out ASAP.
The way all our legs were intertwined to fit in was so chaotic and painful. The excursion was only 40 mins, but after 10 I was ready to GTFO. Man, I couldn't imagine going down a couple kms and dying like that. I hope it was a quick breach and not a slow slog to their end. Poor bastards.

I talked to a US Navy submariner once in the bar. And one of the great pranks that they pull on new submariners, or civilian contractors, is when the boat comes to port after a few weeks at sea they bring them up to the tower for some fresh air, and then send them down below. They have gotten used to the natural smells of the submarine that the filters can't keep up with. Bring them up for air, and then send them down into what he generously called a stench bomb.

A 3/8 cable that could reach the surface would weigh over 2500 lbs, and would probably break trying to pull the thing up. I guess you could have few floating buoys that act like breadcrumbs, with locators on them. Not sure how you get them to float to the surface under the pressure at depth.

Exactly why I say Das Boot is one of the best movies ever. I swear that by the end I can almost smell it

Some of it might have been resolved and I wouldn’t be as concerned on the porthole question of certified depth versus designed depth but there being no mechanism for testing of the seam of the capsule is concerning.
|
I think it's the same as hockey sticks. When its stressed or fractured it can break unexpectedly and without warning. That's why the one engineer who complained that they weren't doing any destructive testing or deep analysis (they would have to replace the whole thing) between dives complained about before he was fired.

He's responsible for creating this situation, but don't be too hard on the CEO, Stockton Rush right now. He's under a lot of pressure.

Do we know descent rates? I mean does it line up with the window imploding after 1300 m and the 1.75hrs of descent?

Did you watch the TV show? It's pretty good too. For free on CBC Gem.
https://gem.cbc.ca/das-boot
My wife is learning German, so I watch it with subtitles(probably the best way).
