I've also been trying to figure out what assets Canada is deploying for this. Media coverage has mangled a lot of the details. So far it seems like:
- 1 CP-140 Aurora from 14 Wing Greenwood (ha, we wish we had P-8s...)
- HMCS Glace Bay (Kingston Class Coastal Defence, equipped with a mobile hyperbaric chamber)
-CCGS John Cabot (Fisheries Support)
- HMCS Harry De Wolfe
- CCGS Kopit Hopson (Ice breaker)
- Various SAR assets (C-130's) at the direction of JRCC Halifax
So other than the Aurora, there doesn't seem to be a lot of ASW capabilities from Canada. Worth nothing that the De Wolf and Hopson have flight decks which might be able to host a Cyclone (assuming the ASW capabilities for that have been completed...) Perhaps the surface search is the focus for us.

Not that I am seriously considering it, but..... if you wanted to fake your own death, this would be the way to do it. Who knows what kind of debt this guy may have been in. Take one last big payment from the passengers (they also had bookings for next year already), say you are going down with the others, then bail at the last minute sending the 4 down alone. Pay off the boat contractor to hide you while all this is going on. Just make sure the vessel is compromised just enough that it implodes at depth so that no human remains will ever be found. Then once all the hullabaloo subsides, take your money and disappear somewhere.

Jeez. I recall once I was on the toilet and my wife came in and just started casually doing her make up like it was no big deal. I was like, privacy please?
Could you imagine dropping the kids off at the pool and having 4 people trying to look at the Titanic behind you? I'd be pretty annoyed.

While the game controller thing is damn funny, there is a case to be made for using off-the-shelf parts for systems that do not require innovative tech. Would a custom controller built specifically for this sub have been safer? It's not like the controller is very big, you bring a couple of (previously tested) backups with you, and if it fails, you use one of those. Same with the ballast, being compact and heavy is 99% of the design spec, custom machining it out of unobtanium is overkill.
If the hull failed, which seems the most likely scenario, the design of the other parts is irrelevant. That part is the one that should have been overengineered to withstand 1.5 or 2 times the pressure it was intended to operate under, and what should have been tested with various unmanned prototypes hundreds of times before sending anyone down.

Since this thing seems like a half-assed Jalopy, the only space for the toilet was in front of the porthole and one of the other Billionaires got the runs?
"We're here guys, the Titanic is right in front of us, but unfortunately Jerry is destroying the crapper...all your cheques cleared right?"

What are the ASW capabilities that would be helpful that the helicopters can deploy that the ships wouldn't have? When I think of helicopter ASW I think of closing distance and dropping torpedoes or sonar buoys but I don't really know what they're capable of beyond that. Given the general location is known, how many planes would need to be dropping buoys to be helpful in the search?

It sure seems odd that a genuine billionaire would put his life in the hands of this Oceangate outfit... Like, you'd have advisors, lawyers, life insurance policies, etc, etc all screaming to not do this.
And FWIW, the Tritone sub capable of reaching the Titanic is about $15mm... Not cheap, but not really unreasonable to a billionaire this committed to seeing the Titanic.

From an article in the Washington Post from 2017:
The U.S. Navy plans to equip its Virginia-class submarines with Xbox 360 controllers, which will control the ship’s periscopes.
These are nuclear attack submarines.

I think in general, billionaires do what they want when they want. One of the main perks of being '#### you' rich.
