It's been a long, long time since I've posted here...maybe 10 years...I actually tried to make a new profile to post this since I still read the forum every day...but the site reminded me that this account still exists. I just needed to say this:
I really hope the Flames trade 'em all. It's their chance to finally get some real futures for the first time, really, since 2013 when they started a rebuild that didn't quite work out.
Between 2013 and now, the flames had the Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett and Tkachuk era.
They won 2 play off rounds through those 10 years. Not a complete failure, but not the success that us fans want. Especially watching Las Vegas get 5 years of playoffs, 2 finals appearances and a Stanley Cup in 6 years.
Over paying for lindholm, hanifin, toffoli, Tanev, Backlund and any one else will just make the team a bunch of old guys who have never won anything and never will.
Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving was the end of an era. Kadri, Huberdeau and Weegar were an attempt to stay relevant, and not a bad one I have to say....but it didn't work. Flames missed the play offs, and now this aging team is a year older.
For once I would like to see the Flames get some futures. They could get decent value for lindholm and hanifin especially.
They can't trade Huberdeau or Kadri, our overpaid 55 point players who are on the wrong side of 30.
I remember the summer they drafted Monahan. I had a lot of hope for the future that year. I hope they have a summer like that this year.
Are players in their early 30s over the hill? No. I think Kadri and Huberdeau will be decent players for the next few years...but I'd really like to see the flames add some youth to this roster.
It's weird how fast time goes by. It's hard to believe that Gaudreau is 30, and Monahan is 29. It feels like yesterday when they were the young talent that were going to lead the flames some day to a deep playoff run. Then tkachuk joined the team and things looked promising. Also, I honestly thought that Sam Bennett was going to be the next Doug Gilmore in Calgary...
And they're all gone now. The team the flames have now reminds me of the late Iginla era Flames. Over paid, aging veterans who can't quite make it.
Kadri is turning 33. Same age as me. Makes me feel old that the aging veterans are my age and that I'm older than most of the players on the team!

Lindholm is essential to extending the window. If they can sign him then back to trying to get into playoffs and hoping for a run

Toffoli just seems like a easy guy to deal with.

Rightly or wrongly I would go into the season with Toffoli and Tanev as is. To me they seem like two guys you can let walk, or extend short term, if the Flames are in a playoff spot or deal at the TDL. They probably both get decent returns at that point.

Welcome back but I think it’s unrealistic to think the Flames, or any team for that matter, would trade 1/3 of their line up in one offseason.

I’m happy if Lindholm resigns 8x8 and even Backlund at 3.5 x 3 yrs…. Takes him to 38 yrs old. No way the Flames are giving him more than 1 yr extension at his current rate.
Trade Hanifin
Trade Toffoli
Trade Vladar
Unless 1sts are involved, keep Tanev and Zadorov
Resign Stetcher at a decent rate.

I just want a juicy trade! Hanifin and Lindholm.
The flames haven't traded for futures (draft picks or young prospects) since the short rebuild started when they traded Iginla, Boumeester and Regehr. Those returns were bad because the flames waited too long.
This summer is the perfect time to trade those 2!

We all know in the cap world higher salaries are harder to deal until the off-season. That combined with this years mediocre UFA crop means the Flames could get some nice value for Hanifin and Lindholm. Combine that with the possibilities that come from this draft in particular and I don't know how the Flames don't take that chance? Backstrom and Toffoli could be dealt at the deadline so I'm not concerned about what we do with them specifically, but the returns for the former could be great where all the stars align value-wise.

For me it’s;
Resign: Lindholm 8x8.5 & Backlund 3x4
Trade: Hanifin & Vladar
Start the season with: Toffoli, Tanev, Zadorov
You move Toffoli Tanen and Zadorov at the TDL if the season isn’t going well. Of course if you get an offer that’s attractive enough, you do it earlier. Or if they’re willing to sign short term, you consider that also, specifically Zadorov and Toffoli. I like Tanev but you do have to question durability as he gets older.

I hate the Monahan deal. Tank and we don’t benefit. Our pieces would be fine to trade at a higher cap after 2 more seasons perhaps.

Oh 100%. Just not sure that’s what I want… I think I’m 60/40 leaning towards just not worrying about playoffs for a couple seasons.
As a hockey fan there is nothing better than watching live NHL playoffs. Except watching your team hoist the SC which I’ve never been lucky enough to see. I don’t think re-signing Lindy leads us to an SC within his contract. It’s just too much money on a player who is at the peak of his prime and will be tied to a longer term.
Hard decision for Conroy and for Elias too

What? The 1st we traded with Monny is lottery protected. Both the FLA pick AND the CGY pick. MTL gets whichever pick isn't in the lottery.

If neither the Flames nor Panthers draft in the top-10, the Canadiens get the better pick of the two.
If we’re bad in 2025 and do have a top-10 pick, in the most likely scenario, the Canadiens get the Panthers pick not ours.
Quote:
B) If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection and Florida's 2025 first round selection (previously acquired by Calgary) is outside of the top-10 selections (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice).
|
I do agree though - I absolutely loathe that Monahan trade to Montreal. Terrible work by Treliving.

I mean, the team has always had guys who won the cup. And the same goes for any team. Winning on that team? No one on the Avs won as an Av. Until they did. See Vegas this year.

I don't see this team making the playoffs next year. Winning the cup? Really? Do
You actually see that?
Last summer, I couldn't wait until the battle of Alberta rematch...but the season proved to be a team that couldn't string a solid winning streak together.
The replacements for Gaudreau (Huberdeau) and Tkachuk (Kadri) didn't replicate what they could do the year before and now they're a year older.
I'm not trying to be overly negative, it's just like I said before: just this once, I'd like the flames trade players who are on expiring contracts for a bunch of futures. Last time they did that was when they traded Curtis Glencross in 2015, where they still made the playoffs and even beat the Canucks.
I think that year they got lucky and got over zealous with signing veterans.
Brouwer, Neal, Coleman. Even Markstrom. Over paid vets who did not live up to what they were supposed to bring.
After 2015's run, Treliving never sold high on any players. Just traded futures. 1st and two 2nds for Hamilton. 1st and two 2nds for Hamnoic.
I would love to see, for the first time in like a decade, for the flames to trade Hanifin for a 1st and two 2nds. Or Lindholm for two firsts. Anything but trading for more aged players! Flames need youth.

I'm saying that your criteria of "players who have won something" is never achieved until it's achieved. And while collecting draft picks is one way to try and win, its certainly no more certain than going about it the Vegas way.

What window are they extending? Window of competing for the 6-8th seed? Make no mistake this team does not have a Stanley Cup window as they are nowhere near good enough. This hoping for a run stuff just sets organizations back, gets people fired, and frustrates fans with constant mediocrity.

How can you say you don’t see this team making the playoffs next year when we don’t know what the lineup is going to be? How are they going to respond to the off ice changes? They haven’t even set foot on ice nor will they for about 3.5 months!
Far far too premature to be making these types of statements. I know there’s a bad taste in many peoples mouth after last season and it’s a whole lot easier to believe they won’t be very good but prior to last season starting, many people including hockey journalists and insiders thought this team was better than they were the year prior. The Athletic had them as cup finalists. Things got off to a very good start and then Sutter lost his marbles and it snow balled.
I think we need to get to mid-July before we can even start to squint and say ‘this is/isn’t a playoff team’.

Oh I agree which is why I wouldn't be too sad if Lindholm walks. There seems to way less smoke with him right now, so I am prepping for the extension lol
