Keeping Huberdeau is still consistent with a rebuild. You still need to reach the cap floor so let him eat up all that cap and he can rack up his points along the way.
It might be easier to get high draft picks with him on the roster at 10.5 than it would be without him.

Huberdeau having one bad year after being traded, going to a new city, new team, new linemates and playing under a coach that used him terribly (including playing him on his wrong wing at times) doesn't mean that's the player he is going forward.
Have a feeling he's going to make a ton of people eat their words.

Almost guaranteed he has a much better year this season. I was just addressing the people saying to dump him, that be very difficult to do and unlikely that the team would even try.

IMO, the only way forward for the team is to change their identity completely, by playing a more offensive game. I think Conroy is doing that, but for whatever reason the Flames have seemed to always have a crash and bang reputation. If you want to attract players I think that's the least attractive style for them. Especially nowadays they want to show off their skill a bit. Huberdeau will only be good as the style allowed to play. Plus it depends on his linemates. He's good enough to do things on his own but as he starts to get older it will be harder without good linemates. Can't see him surpassing 85 points though. If he does get that I'd be happy.

Amazing how short peoples' memories are. 9 months ago many posters were talking about the 'Sutter Window" being one of the biggest reasons the Flames might contend in the next few years...it's even more ridiculous to assume that last season is the new normal for Huby compared to his previous 5.

The window is cooked if Lindholm, Hanifin, and Toffoli want out. It will be a re-tool/rebuild around Huberdeau and Kadri.

I'm saying everyone looked through a lens of Sutter being a coaching god. Now people are looking through a lens of Huberdeau being a boat anchor. 12 months from now a bunch of present assumptions are gonna look hilariously dumb.

Yes, but which people?
The people who assume Huberdeau is a boat anchor, or the people who assume he will bounce back?

I’m sure he is better than he showed this year. I just don’t believe he’s the kind of player you build a championship team around.

Losing a 1st in a deep draft to sign Kadri for 7 years. Ugh that stings.

Is 2025 expected to be a deep draft?

Huberdeau probably will bounce back next year but I don't think anyone is worried about year one of eight.

The first years of this contract are the ones which people should look at though. In the last half the cap will be a lot higher and his percentage will go down, not to mention that every long term contract is expected to not have value in the last couple years.

I don't think anyone is assuming he'll be bad, but there is reason to worry that he might be quite a bit less than hoped for.
It's certainly not a sure thing he'll bounce back.

FWIW i don't trust Elliot Friedman because of that bald spot he's got. He's get a hair transplant or a toupee if he was really committed to his role.
