Or they just continue to strip down local programming, fill the airways with their national SN programming and then run the games as part of their package as a rights holder. I can't see Rogers walking away from the rights to have Corus or someone pick them up

It doesn't help 960 that the new morning show is awful. No offense to that Russic guy who came in and tried to make it a segment that didn't lose a step.

It doesn't have the camaraderie, charm and personality of Boomer, Rhett and Warrener.

Over the year I've become a Barnburner and they're who I go to for local reaction on everything, until Flames talk comes on (way too late in the day).

Angry grandpa Rhett is can't miss podcasting.

I've been hard on Rusic but I think he's been better the last couple weeks and the show has been better because of that.

Feels like he's trying to force the narrative less and letting topics happen a little more organically.

Hard to say what the future will hold. I could see it move that way for sure. In most Canadian markets you have the hockey team and a CFL team. Plus the Jay's and Raptors as National teams in their sport. So you almost need that plus Prime NFL to be able to have enough content to broadcast and fill the gaps. With Rogers and Bell going after each other and trying to hoard their content it creates gaps and the market for local content at a specified time likely isn't there if there's no event before or after.

Very good point. I wonder if you see a Shaw/Rogers style merger at some point.

I’m super disappointed that 1260 is gone. It has been a big part of my life for the last, I don’t know, 20 years or however long they were on the air. This is a blow. Jason Gregor raised a tonne of money for charity through his show and did fantastic work. It sucks to see AM radio continue to go this way. I’m sure they’ll get into podcasting somehow but I can’t imagine the revenue from that will be close to what it was on the radio.

Aren't there significantly more people on YouTube and Spotify these days than people who tuning into AM radio?

Those platforms should be potentially just as lucrative if you can manage to secure the sponsors.

Pretty sure most of the 960 sponsors have carried over to Barnburner as well as some new ones.

Reputation and familiarity certainly help but it's probably wise to not wait long to make the transition while your radio show is still fresh in people's memories.

Wow kudos to you for being able to listen to that guy for 5 min without changing the channel.

Listening to that morning show for multiple days could have an adverse effect on your overall mental health, please find a professional to help you if you are struggling.

I find it hard to tell the difference between their voices at times. Sad thing is, I can’t see Shaw/Rogers spending anything to try and improve it now.

Flamesnation has 4.6k subscribers. That’s #### all by Youtube standards, and can’t even be generating enough money to cover the rent on the studio. And with those numbers, sponsors won’t be paying much for spots.

You're not wrong about those numbers but it's still relatively early for BB and it could blow up, since I think they have the right personalities and format. Their content is very consumable.

They could help themselves by expanding to appeal to a broader hockey or sports audience by having segments devoted to broader topics and other teams.

There are some youtubers that started as Flames fans doing Flames-centric content who now make league-wide videos and are pushing the right buttons to work the algorithm to their advantage and now have accrued in the 100k subscribers ballpark.

The guys just have to do a feeling out process with their shorts, titles and show content to hit with the larger NHL audience

It's a hard time for radio guys/podcasters. If someone like Kypreos in Toronto can only get 20-30k hits on Youtube it's tough.

I didn't hate the show or anything, but it's a lot of content. I think that's a double-edged sword because I can't possibly listen to it all. I also can't listen live, so you're basically getting two day old content in that case, which isn't ideal for sports. The radio show was just plain easier. I'd flip it on, catch some of the ridiculousness and get to where I'm going. For that kind of content, for me, a pod cast is a lot of effort.

And I thought it was tough for them during the hockey season, but traction from now through October has got to be really difficult.

What Flames YT content creators are pushing 100K subscribers?

But there is so much content available for that broader audience - breaking through somehow is next to impossible if you don't have a marketing push behind you, or attachment to a bigger platform.

I suspect they are largely doing it for fun, and not depending on it to make a living.

I sure hope so. Even then, I suspect they're hoping that it can be a full time gig eventually.

Johnnyhawkey is my favorite. Not 100K but he gets major viewss. He's more of an analysis guy but he covers the Flames big time and has mentioned Barn Burner once or twice to his audience. I'll bet he's here on this site somewhere too.
