Exactly. What could have been….

One year of patience, and they would have had a ton of cap with Horvat, Pettersson, Hughes, and Demko as a core.

Thank-you Jim Benning!

So given the upside of waiting a year to do this (maybe he bounces back to be a top guy plus a cheaper buy out structure if not), I'm guessing Rutherford has his eyes on someone they are targeting to bring in. Either a UFA signing or a pending UFA after next season they want to acquire and extend.

I think it's more to do with just general cap flexibility. That's been his stated goal since he got here. Also, Allvin.

They want to improve their blue line now.
This organization thinks they're on the cusp of competing & their window is now.

Guys on Canucks radio yesterday were saying they'd be shocked if the 11th overall pick isn't traded for a now player.

Which brings me to Hanafin for 11th OA?

The Canucks were a team rumored to be after Hanifin just prior to his trade here.

Gotta think he probably has VAN on his no trade list. Can't see why he would waive either unless they were going to offer him some sort of huge contract extension.

Yeah, leaving Canada is probably near the top of his list if he wants to move on.

Arizona loses one of their retained salary slots for the next 8 years. Probably better than having to pay OEL, but kinda ties their hands a bit as ARI has a penchant for taking on salary cap for assets.

Sure, but they were already committed to doing that for 4 more years. Pretty small price to pay for getting a 9OA pick while ditching the biggest buyout ever.
