Default 15 dead, 10 hospitalized in crash on Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba

Manitoba RCMP said around 11:43 a.m. Thursday, officers received a report that a bus carrying approximately 25 people collided with a semi truck at Highway 1 and Highway 5, near the Town of Carberry – a community two hours west of Winnipeg.

Manitoba RCMP Commanding Officer Rob Hill said as of Thursday evening, the crash has left 15 people dead, with 10 other people being taken to hospital with injuries. Hill said the people on the bus are from Dauphin and the surrounding area – most of them were seniors.

"This is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as one of tragedy and incredible sadness," Hill said.

A spokesperson for Sand Hills Casino in Carberry has confirmed the bus was en route to the casino.

Maybe the wrong time to ask this question, but why don't we wear seatbelts on coach buses? (did they finally install seat belts on school buses?)

Absolutely horrible.

The bus was coming from Dauphin, which is two hours north of Carberry. Travelling south on Highway 5, there is a stop sign with a flashing red light when you approach the Highway 1 westbound lanes, then a tight median and yield sign at the eastbound lanes. No idea what actually happened but it’s easy to miss the yield sign.

Although it’s flat and clear in all four directions, it’s also a tricky intersection because there isn’t enough room in the median for larger vehicles to stop safely.

That’s terrible. Bus accidents always seem to be the worst case scenario. Like mentioned above generally no seat belts.

Its not even just the seatbelts.

I can tell you from working at Greyhound for a few years, in order to keep the weight down, buses are flimsy. There is not a lot to them and they are built as cheaply as possible.

Light glass, thin walls...they are not durable vehicles. Your average passenger car's safety rating is lightyears better than a bus.

You can say 'no seat belts' but it really doesnt matter that much.

To save money and weight the chairs themselves are bolted into almost nothing. You can wear a racing restraint if you want, but its not going to help if the whole seat goes flying.

The bold part is very similar to the Humboldt bus tragedy where the driver of the semi-truck had failed to yield at a flashing stop sign and obliterated the bus.

Horrible tragedy and 100% preventable unfortunately. There is no reason for not having grade separated interchanges when any primary highway meets the Trans Canada highway. It's surprising we don't have more accidents like this.

Just did a quick look at Alberta to see how many at grade intersections there are between primary highways and the TCH system (#1 and #16).

Highway #1 has at grade crossings with highways:
21, 24, 36, and 41 (twice). Hwy 36 is especially busy, that one absolutely needs an interchange with all the heavy truck traffic.

Highway #16 has at grade crossing with highways:
15, 22, 32, 36, and 40.

And that doesn't count intersections with secondary highways which should also be grade separated IMHO.

I just Google Map'ed that intersection. Looks dangerous as hell and you can easily see how a bad accident could happen.

This is the intersection? With heavy duty vehicles moving at 100+kph? Yikes. That looks like a nightmare.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often across the country, but specifically Northern Ontario to Alberta.

There are a lot of intersections that look like this one.

Heck the one down at Aldersyde used to be horrendous.
