If he comes back and wants to add 100k here or an NTC there, sure whatever.

The point is, this team has been breaking it's back trying to retain its own talent and needs to show some pride in the C and draw the line. Every one is replaceable if you let your culture takeover. The root problem though is that this team's culture is damaged. There's a number of ways to rebuild it, but the safest one is by drafting and developing and building loyalty, the latter being the big failure of the previous administration.
I don't disagree that is the way the team should look at it but the owner wants to run it back, Maloney wants to run it back, what are you going to do as GM? You going to go rogue and sell off your key players for futures? I don't think so.

Hockey trades are always available, they are much easier to do than trying to deal for futures because it is money in money out.

A rookie GM, A rookie HC, non playoff team with 7 FAs with trade values, one of the strong draft year, no cap space to improve roster, and a new arena coming in 3 years.
When is the perfect time to rebuild?

…but also, that doesn’t make 2024 a bad time to rebuild either.

But also, #%^*ing #%^* #%^* #%^* they should have rebuilt last season.

8 years for Lindholm. Absolutely no way, unless his AAV starts with a 6.

I'm just going to embrace the fact that my favorite Flame player wants out.

That's now the 3rd in 4 years off to greener pastures. Bennett and Monahan before him.

Maybe we need a fresh identity... Something youthful, something catchy... How about the Young Guns?

I'll show myself out

And if I was him I’d be deeply offended if that was the offer. That’s about 15m off the table that he deserves.

As a 29 year old? Keep in mind he only gets 8 years in Calgary.

Someone else can pay him that. It’d be one thing if the flames hadn’t just invested in Kadri and Huby, or if they had a young roster with some ELC guys ready to step up big time.

I’d sooner go 5-6 years and increase AAV. No more 8 year deals for guys who’ll spend half the contact post apex.

I just don't understand the desire to sign a man who will be 30 years old one month into the contract for 8 years.

These are the kinds of deals you give your star players after you've won your Cup and you don't reasonably expect to win again with them on the roster.

He doesn’t only get 8 years in Calgary.

No 29 year old is going to sign a 5-6 year contract. To make up for the lost 2-3 years, you’d need to spread that 27M lost across those earlier years.

$9M X 8 Years = $72M.
$14.4M X 5 Years = $72M.

He only gets 8 years in Calgary. Or the team acquiring him.

That being the key.

Whoever acquires will likely be quite motivated to extend him.
