$8.9 million is the new 7.5 million in terms of salaries in the NHL.

I don't disagree except that I think guys like Toffoli and Tanev could have equal or higher value at the deadline. They have reasonable cap hits, and at the deadline more teams could be in play.
I think your younger pending FAs have to be dealt with before the season starts (ideally at the draft) but the older ones can be dealt with during the season or at the deadline.

If you operated this way as a GM absolutely nobody would ever sign with this team again as long as you were employed. Telling players you won't negotiate with them would lead to a very short GM life.

You're all assuming 8.9 is what Lindholm wants

Yes, I’ve suggested that they and maybe Backlund are almost more valuable at the deadline with prorated hits. The one caveat is Tanev’s health.

8.9x8 is a fair deal.
It skews a bit in lindholms favour but it's not too outlandish.
Definitely feels like a take it or leave it offer.

You build a team successfully by managing your cap efficiently not but just spending because you have the money. Sure the cap may go up, we hear this argument all the time with Huberdeau, still doesn’t make it a wise use of your cap, now we can’t pay guys adequately on 2nd and 3rd line.
It doesn’t matter what the cap is, when you are overpaying on contracts you hurt the team

What Sec hears is not fact. Sometimes sources are wrong, like the Love hire. Did Sec even explain his picture? Maybe he was implying Conroy was shooting for a deal.

You build a team by having a #1 C. Exactly where would Boston have been if they had done the same thing with Bergeron? Lindholm is a guy you absolutely keep if you want to win.

If it's 8x8.9 and he said no, see ya.

There’s just no cap room for what he is going to want/deserves.
Hell
Even this year is going to be interesting. We have just over 1M in room and 4 or 5 spots to fill.

If they play their cards exactly wrong, they may time the beginning of their decade long cratering with the opening night of the new building. I think Conroy is smarter than that though.

I wouldn’t have a problem paying $8.9 million for lindholm. They are not rebuilding. In order for it to work Zary, Coranato, and Jacob would have to make huge impacts on the team for the team to have a chance to win the cup.

The team may not want to rebuild, but if Lindholm, hanifin, Backlund say they won't sign long term what choice do they have?

Ok, in a literal sense, no. But in the sense of, hey, we're not going to lowball you. Here is the market rate and we're willing to do this number. It represents fair value and we want to win with you as a flame, but if not, we're trading you.
If he comes back and wants to add 100k here or an NTC there, sure whatever.
The point is, this team has been breaking it's back trying to retain its own talent and needs to show some pride in the C and draw the line. Every one is replaceable if you let your culture takeover. The root problem though is that this team's culture is damaged. There's a number of ways to rebuild it, but the safest one is by drafting and developing and building loyalty, the latter being the big failure of the previous administration.
