If they do have to move guys like Lindholm and/or Hanifin, I think its important for Calgary to get younger, or at least stay the same.
On paper the Florida trade looked good, but Calgary got older in the process; not ideal imo as you shortern your window that way.
Easy to say I know, but something I really hope they are able to do

Factoring age, Lindholm is still the most valuable imo. He’s just too good a 200 ft player. You can sign him to an 8 year extension at 28 years old and I just don’t see his game dropping off that much by the end of his deal. Much like Backlund in that regard.

Guys who don’t rely on top line speed or streaky offensive production and instead build their game around smarts and defensive play seem to age so well.
I have zero doubt that if you sign Lindholm to 8 that he’s just as good if not better at the end than he is right now.

Prior to picking up Kadri, which was a separate deal, Calgary wasn’t a whole lot older though after the trade. Huberdeau and Gaudreau are a saw off in terms of age and Weegar and Tkachuk are only 4 years apart (and Dmen seem to last a few years longer).

4 years is quite a lot in hockey terms when you are talking about 4 prime years.

Maybe but like I said, a 25 year old forward and a 29 year old dman are maybe about equal in terms of prime years. Minute eaters like Weegar play well into their mid-late 30s, whereas a player like Tkachuk can burn out quickly.

In terms of his intelligence/hockey sense, Tkachuck is elite. If there is an Achilles heal with the player it is his feet. I’m sure he will have a lengthy career but his spot as a top 5-10 player in the league may not last into his 30’s.

Yes, I'm talking physically. He's already beat up. And with his lack of foot speed and evasiveness, he's gonna get tagged a lot. The East is a more physical division as well IMO. And I wonder about his overall fitness anyway. I don't recall him being known as a gym rat like Gio.

I am still focused on the Blues as a potential dance partner. Really like Bolduc and his recent performance at the Memorial Cup, and they have a 1st this year. Hanifin or Lindholm would suit them extremely well.

Reading HF it would appear Blues fans are very interested in Lindholm as well.
St.Louis did it right by the retool they moved out pending free agents and now walk into the draft with 3x 1st rounders including the 10th overall.

yup I agree, Lindholm has been a loyal soldier been underpaid most of his contract, and Center is a premium position, why would he take less then the guy you gave a boatload of cash for on the wing before he played a game for your team. Then that player went on to massively underperform.

You get paid for point production in this league.
Huberdeau produced at a 1.21 pts/g rate over the four years prior to his extension (99 point pace)
Lindholm has produced at a 0.86 pts/g rate over the past four years (70 point pace)

On anything the Flames are offering you’d have to think the Leafs would be in on it given the connection and the fit where the flames have what most would see as two way players. My guess is ownership would be reluctant to do a deal with Treliving unless it was a kings ransom.
Anyway, just spitballing but I’m really liking the possibility of a solid retool here. Lindholm can truly bring back a quality return if picks and players. Backlund can probably get a B prospect and a 2nd. Hanifin a first and a prospect. Then at the deadline Toffoli gets dealt for some needs. Instantly it’s a retool and things aren’t looking too shabby.
