The funny part is that the IRS has started reviewing its religious tax-exempt status...

But they're not starting with the Mormons or the Scientologists...which one would imagine would be the low-hanging fruit.

Thats going to be a battle....if they even bother deciding to continue with it.

Defrocked Nunavut priest arrested on historical sexual assault charges

Iqaluit RCMP said Eric Dejaeger, 76, was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant Wednesday in Kingston, Ont., where he was living. Police said he will be transported to Iqaluit to appear on the charges before the Nunavut Court of Justice.

Police gave no details about when and where the alleged assaults occurred, but said the charges stem from investigations conducted between 2011 and 2015.

Dejaeger, who was born in Belgium and became a Canadian citizen in 1977, has previously been convicted of numerous sexual offences.

He served part of a five-year sentence beginning in 1990 for sexual crimes against children in Baker Lake, Nunavut, committed between 1982 and 1989.

Following his release, he learned RCMP were investigating his activities in Igloolik, Nvt., and fled to Belgium. He was extradited back to Canada in 2011 over immigration violations.

In 2015, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for 32 crimes he committed against Inuit children and some adults between 1978 and 1982 in Igloolik. The offences included indecent assault, unlawful confinement and bestiality.

Dejaeger had pleaded guilty to eight counts and was convicted of a further 24 largely against children between eight and 12 years old. The details of the crimes were so appalling the judge’s sentencing came with a content warning.

Later in 2015, Dejaeger was also sentenced for historical sexual offences against children in Alberta, to be served concurrently with his sentence for the Igloolik charges.

There is a Baptist Seminary in Cochrane, and I've been to a few talks out of curiosity. Very aggressively angry people. In a very calm, and sure of themselves and their message, aggressively angry way. They have a massive chunk of land right up on the hill.

edit : in response to getbak, yeah they are Southern Baptist. There's a whole complex up there, I honestly don't know if it's all post secondary, or what. I have one wild story where five religions came together to discuss evolution and how each of their religions felt about the concept, and it was very, very awkward. I think that two Christians were represented, the Southern Baptists and Franciscan Friars, whose demeanors were very different.

Splitting hairs perhaps but I read this is they voted to expel entire churches which had female pastors. They are not purging female pastors per se, they are expelling congregations that employ female pastors.

"In total, five churches have been expelled from SBC for being led by women."

"Following the two churches' expulsion, a constitutional amendment was also passed at SBC's annual convention stating that SBC-affiliated churches should employ "only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture"

Oh, I was listening to a good podcast on this. Basically in the classical mindset, if you are a receptacle to be penetrate (women and bottom gay men...) that you are the one being acted upon and lack general agency in the world. So for a non-agent such as these women who were built to be pegboards for straight manly men to act as a thought leader for those men is just incomprehensible to those invested in this mindset. And they need to defend their position as the penetrator by affirming that they are above the penetratees in the social hierarchy lest someone else try to penetrate them.
