You know what insurance is on a million dollar boat in the Caribbean? About 10% with a 20% deductible. Obviously the giant storms play a role in that, but a lot of owners just self insure, even if they are loaded.

Anyways, just a little anecdote of my life. That guy was nuts.

A motorcycle was one of the best purchases I've made. They're cheap, useful and I just think in a completely different discussion compared to a yacht.

I was looking at motorcycles online the other day. I used to dirtbike in my 20s, but never had a street bike. There are so many cool-looking street bikes and I agree their cool-to-price ratio is unbeatable, but I got scared I'd die if I had one so I stopped searching.
So then I started looking at those three-wheeled Can-Am things, but I remembered they're super lame so abandoned that.

I went by the aftermath of two accidents within a few weeks and that was enough to convince me to sell mine. I do somewhat regret selling it, but I guess I just felt like I had my fun. It was so great, and going for a ride is just a great feeling, but it's the other drivers who are such a danger. One time on Deerfoot a cab was just changing lanes into me...I laid on the horn and it was terrifying! Things like that are just out of your control, and just plain life threatening, whereas in a vehicle you'd be annoyed with some car repairs and likely unscathed as a person.

That's sounds super freaky. Yeah, not worth it. We've made it this far in life and it'd be the biggest downer to die like that.
I have had a couple convertibles over the last decade that maybe sorta give you a portion of that experience. I just find having an extra car to be a hassle right now (winter storage, parking, more maintenance screwing around).

Boat people always humble brag about how much their hobby costs. It's weird

Lol!
1) Buy it for $100,000
2) Sell it for $50,000
3) Use proceeds to pay for car repairs.
4) Profit?

I disagree, and think most motorcyles are dumb looking.

I try to stay off Deerfoot, congestion at high speed, holds too much risk on a bike.
It's why I try to have lots of off-road/backcountry adventures on mine (60/40 rubber), away from all the chaos.

I remember going by a motorcycle accident and seeing the motorcycle helmet a very far distance away from the body/bike. Saw it on the news afterwards that it was a fatality.
Apparently fatalities also skew heavily against motorcyclists, something like 30 times more likely.
You'd see the odd police chase online and the horrific outcomes when the human body gets up to speed on a bike and the you can see why. I think it was just last year, the impact was so crazy the guy cartwheeled and basically lost all his clothes. Nightmares of just the ragdolling.

Ya, a good family friend got killed years ago, clipped by a truck as he was waiting to turn. He was always safe and careful. Such a great person, gone like that. Left a family behind. Doesn't seem worth the risk.

I lived that situation. Years back a guy in a motorcycle rear ended me. I was cruising at a good pace on Crowchild and I saw the bike closing in fast in my rearview. Seconds later some ####### decided to change lanes without checking and cut me off and I had to slam my brakes. No problem for me but as I slowed down I could see like in slow motion the biker going way too fast and imminent collision in the back of my car. He hit my rear and the bike went up the back of my car and I watched as he went cartwheeling forward past the driver side of my car. He was in bad shape and they had to cut his jacket off before they took him away in a stretcher. The police retrieved one of his shoes about 25 feet forward from where he hit my car. Out of coincidence he was a TD customer as well so when I was dealing with insurance I asked them how he was doing and they said not good as he was still in the hospital two weeks later.

A buddy of mine, who is a Sea Captain, delivers yachts around the world. Either through sales or repositioning them from the Caribbean (Winter) to the Adriatic (summer).

Yeah and that clearly illustrates the issue. You can be involved in just an unlucky accident and the consequences on a bike are severe. It's fine on the highway, but not without its risks. You just remove the big one, which is traffic.

I have a very good friend who is an ER nurse. She would tell me the survival rate of motorcycle-related accidents would pale in comparison to those involved in a car accident. They were also absolutely horrific... which for someone who is used to seeing that kind of thing is quite a statement.
She rarely ever straight out told me to do anything, but was pretty clear about me taking up motorcycling.

My ER nurse friend was freaking out on September long because of all the fun I was having with hand sanitizer and a humungous fire we had made. She did kind of scare me into settling down, though. Those people see some messed up stuff.
