I'm not as fussed on the Huska hire vs. Love. I don't know that we have enough information for opinions to be SO strong on either candidate.
What concerns me is the 'get into the playoffs and anything can happen' mantra that was again on display in this presser. It appears the focus is do everything it takes to re-sign Lindholm, bring back the band because it's a playoff team.
Any optimism I had that Conroy's vision could have positively influenced ownership's stance on rebuild is somewhat squashed.
Given the ownership regime, probably shame on me for naively thinking anything would change.

Its interesting to hear Conroy talk about this.
Our top players need to play if we are down a goal double shift the top line.
The assistant coaching hires are just as important from Conroy.
Also interesting to hear how open Conroy and Huska are talking openly about guys who got interviewed.

The captain should be Rasmus Andersson.
High level of play.
Always willing to stand up and talk about the team.
Has a great relationship with Huska.
Listen to the points that Huska made.
Andersson will not be afraid to go to the coaching staff about the room and what players are thinking. Conversely he trusts and respects Huska so he will have no problem going to his teammates about the message the coaching staff has for the team and what needs to happen.
Andersson should be a long term core piece to this team.

He's a decent choice. I wonder if Backlund has a great relationship with Huska - he coached him in junior and they won a championship together.

Some good candidates in the room to be captains its a shame no one was given the role last year.
Putting value on the puck was a interesting thing Huska said as well. This was something Peters said a lot when he was hired.
Put value on the puck and it starts with the faceoffs we want the puck. I think we finished 2nd in the NHL his first year in faceoffs as well.

My 2 cents but in a Canadian market, the goal from an ownership perspective is to be a consistent playoff team because that is where the profit comes from. Ultimately winning the cup is the goal to strive for but it's not a realistic one because there are too many variables and no guarantees which team will win a cup each year. However having a team that can be competitive in the playoffs every year and nurturing fans hope that this is the year and that anything can happen in the playoffs is what drives the fans into the buildings and on TV, selling of merchandise, and attracting players.
The Oilers' decade of darkness was an absolute disaster that no NHL executive will ever want to repeat. Tanking is easy until a team has to get out of being a have not. Most of the good teams that find themselves out of the playoffs do their best to quickly get back into it
Therefore as much as fans wants to sell off everything of value and rebuild for a number of years, the market and money making drive pretty much restricts any kind of long term rebuild, especially with a new arena on the horizon

The team will earn more playoff revenue if it takes a longer term approach to building a team and competing for the Stanley Cup rather than trying to fall backwards into the playoffs every year and hope for a fluke run.
The period before a new building is literally the best time to rebuild because I'm less likely to want to pay 50% more in ticket prices to see the same team finish 18th again in the inaugural season.

One thing that will never be in doubt is that we will be getting more insight into how the GM of the Flames thinks - Conroy does so "out loud". Hopefully, he's better at holding his cards close to the vest while in negotiations.

I'm not sure if that Math checks out when you see teams that are in the midst of LOOOOONG playoff droughts with not certainty over when it will end.
And then you have a final four this year who are all "get in and see what happen" teams.
- A team that finished behind the Flames point wise
- A team that missed the playoffs last year
- A team that executed a full re-tool without a deep re-build
- A team that has had very few high draft picks.
Not saying it's the right approach or the one I would take, but certainly these playoffs would have done little to change the mind of the Flames that "get in and see what happens" isn't valid.

The way they talk about Lindholm and guys hes pretty much confirming that he isn't happy and ready to just sign with us.
Also how he talked with Huberdeau throughout the process the most.
When you are investing 84 million into a player for the next 8 year I would think trying to get the best out of him and keeping happy would be important.

I would hope the Flames see one or two seasons where teams like the Panthers this year or Montreal in 2021 as once in a generation runs that cannot be relied on to be repeated. But I agree, I expect the Flames (Edwards) to instead use this as empirical evidence to re-affirm their approach to building a hockey team.
It makes sense to me why this team has wild swings from season to season. Whether its roster composition, coaching, development - this organization has never taken a long-term approach to winning and I don't think it will start now.
And yes, there are fears you get stuck into loop of darkness like Edmonton and Buffalo - but I also think few people would argue that these organizations have had the absolute worst management groups in the sport.

Listening to Huska in that interview, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Andersson is the next captain.

People put way, WAY too much stock into statements by managers and coaches about their goal to make the playoffs. It's rhetoric.
