Regular season who gives a ####? Vegas is in the finals again and will probably win their first Cup.

Not taking a way from Toffoli he had a great year but we have guys in the systems that can be scorers.

Zadorov is a 3rd pairing D who makes glaring mistakes and Tanev is a warrior but he also put together with duct tape.

Like I said I'd like to trade them all minus Hanifin and get some assets but those are 3 core pieces walking.

If they stay my hope is they all come together as a team and support the coach. Seems like we always have a group, or individuals that are underachieving. Flames need to step back and figure out how to get a strong group of players that play together but that also wants to play hard and win.

But your 3 most important free agents leaving isn't a good look if it's the coach.
Tanev and Zadorov are replaceable parts and so is Toffoli.

I don't think we should be singing any of them to long term deals just saying that bit parts staying isn't a endorsement.
It did mention names

“ Once Huska is confirmed, Conroy — who’s made it clear that he won’t let a player walk out the door as a UFA the way Johnny Gaudreau did last summer — can go to the seven players a year away from reaching UFA (including Mikael Backlund, Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin) and bluntly ask what they have in mind.
None would have stayed if Sutter had remained as coach. Huska will be a popular choice. But will his presence be enough to change their minds?“

I agree none of them should get long term extensions but perhaps short term.

Are not those three the most likely to be moved in any event??

Given a choice between Huska and Sutter we should have kept Sutter.

I’m excited.

Everytime I hear Huska speak to the press, I like what I hear. Huska being in the category of “person never in my kitchen” means that’s all I have to go by. Being a good communicator is important in any leadership role so it’s something. And, that interview posted was before Conroy was hired so it’s pretty clear they have always shared similar mindsets. Conroy paraphrased a lot of Huska’s thoughts.

So has there been any actual confirmation besides Kevin Weekes that this is a for sure thing?

I'd expect an update from Friedman during the intermission today.

Definitely didn't give the impression of someone who could effectively push buttons.
Guy on message board I think i remember didnt think the coach was effective in a dressing room he was nowhere near

FWIW sportsnet has an article confirming it but no author name:

Calgary Flames assistant coach Ryan Huska will be named the team's new head coach on Monday, Sportsnet can confirm.

What a dumb post.

Sure. Here’s more:

When a coach gets hired, chances are that it doesn’t pan out. That means that the team never or does not consistently have the type of success that management expects, so the coach is then fired or not renewed.

Now, your original worry was that coaches who go from assistant coaches to head coaches of the same team don’t pan out. Congratulations! You have correctly identified one of the many coach hiring scenarios that, you guessed it, most often doesn’t pan out! Others include: assistants moving to head coach of different teams, head coaches in one league moving to another league, head coaches moving to other teams in the same league, etc.

Now, when do coaches pan out? In all of the above situations and more! Wanna know something crazy? Sometimes coaches who don’t pan out on one team pan out on another team down the road! Wow!

So, as you can see, there’s no reason to worry that the coach might not pan out… because of course he might not! That’s just the way it goes.

Hope you found this enlightening and that it clears everything up for you.

Flames coach won coach of the year and a year later he was the worst guy ever and terrible

hockey is weird

Better goalie play and nobody is fired...I was pulling for Love because he did well in the AHL but with Wolf in net and the Wranglers roster to you really think they would have done poorly with Huska? He almost certainly would have won at a pretty high clip too.

Its pretty hard to judge coaches from the outside...playing the stars more and not making fun of young players in the media is a pretty low bar lol

Not to dump on Huska, because at this point you might as well wait and see, but have there been any examples of an assistant coach promoted to head coach in the same org and having success?

I mean, technically Brunette did take over for Q and win the President's, but they dumped him pretty quickly. I'm sure there are, but off hand I can't think of any.

The Playfair and Ward examples are also pretty weird. Playfair replaced Darryl, who was still his boss. He didn’t do that bad in his one and only year and then weirdly stayed with the team as HC in the AHL. Ward replaced Peters in likely the worst possible scenario. Scandal, mid season and then Covid.

If Conroy thinks he can bring defensive responsibility in our D zone and introduce more creativity in the O zone, I am in. The Vegas/Carolina model basically (and Peters, for about 2/3 of a season).

Mike Sullivan’s first HC job was in Boston, after being AC there. They finished first in his first year. But OOP his second. Of course his big success came elsewhere. Lemaire was an AC in Montreal and then HC. Cassidy was AC in Boston and then HC. Of course, he was a HC years before in Washington.
