Nfld projects 3rd straight budget surplus

Good for them. Nice to see a historically "have not" province getting their finances in order.

I'm a HUGE Danny Williams fan... I love his "my way or f*** it" additude, it's working well for Newfoundland, as opposed to Nova Scotia's "my way, or.. no no... that's ok... you're way will be fine" additude.

Danny is the worst canadian since Trudeau.
He is a populist that benefits from ignorance of his own people. I'm glad their books are in order, but a healthy part of that is through screwing the country by negotiating a one off benefit in the equalization system. Good for Danny, bad for Canada. And he is ruining the long term prosperity of his own province for short term gain. Those ready to invest hundreds of millions in large projects have already walked away because of Danny's populist policy around energy investment.

Danny may well be 'the man', but the Rest of Canada definitely is a major reason that NL is able to post a surplus. Taken at semi random, here is the percentage of total revenues that come to each province from the Government of Canada:
 Nova Scotia: 33%
 Manitoba: 31%
 Newfoundland: 28%
 Saskatchewan: 16%
 Alberta 10%

While by no means is Newfoundland the worst in this respect (Manitoba shocked me actually) a fairly large percentage of the Newfoundland budget does come from the feds.

I was gonna say, with these back to back to back surpluses, when can Alberta expect more of its transfer money back?

			DANNY IS THE MAN!
 Go Danny Go!

I have heard some very ignorant comments here that clearly show the ignorance that some of you have towards Newfoundland. What Danny Williams has done for both the short term and long term of the province is nothing short of a mircale. Previous governments have been screwing over newfoundland for years and it's about time someone has been able to step up and get things done.

Some of you here really don't have a clue and it's funny becuase you really do think you know what you are talking about.

Rant over, thank you for your time.

I don't know anything on the subject, but it appears you do. Rather than only put the others who posted in this thread down, care to elaborate on what all you know?

It's not ignorance towards Newfoundlanders, its observing a obvious populist. Like Cretien to a small extent, like Trudeau to a large extent, and nowadays, kinda like Chavez.

The fact is that NFLD absolutely screws canada with the transfer system.

O&G revenue exempt from the the formula for NFLD right? Is it exempt for Alberta, No. That's a double standard plain and simple. Danny and other politicians might play his flute like the pied piper and get the blind to follow him but it is simply a double standard.

He has manufactured a us vs them, or us vs the world mentality in NFLD, all the while he screws the rest of the country and is disrespectful about doing it.

The people I have apparently "put down" are those who initially made rude comments in the first place. I notice there are some more as well but the fact of the matter is this; it doesn't matter what I type, most people here will argue day and night their own views until the thread gets completely out of control and is locked. It really isn't worth it for me to explain.

See "Flames in 07" most recent post as an example of what I mean. He claims that there is an "NL vs the world" mentality which is BS. I am a Newfoundlander and am sitting here laughing my a$$ off at that comment. It really just isn't worth it for me to argue.

Sorry.

You know of any other province that has decided not to fly the Canadian flag when they don't get there way?

It's nothing against the people, it's something against the premier.

Dave, I don't mean to nitpick or start a fight here with you, but isn't it a bit of a cop-out to come in here ranting like you have and then refusing to illuminate us regarding why your opinion is right? It seems like the message board equivelant of running into a room, smashing a pie in someone's face, yelling, "PWNED!" and then running back out ...
I'd like to know why it's OK for oil and gas revenue to 'not count' for Newfoundland but not for the rest of Canada (including Alberta) other than "because it's good for Newfoundland". Really - this is not me being facetious at all. If what you say is true, and I acknowledge it very well might be, then I clearly need illumination in this area.

And what of the "Canadian flag" issue brought up earlier? If Alberta did that, could you imagine the screaming from the other 12 provinces and territories?
