How many in the Trump orbit are now nervous? He won't hesitate to throw as many of them under the the bus if it saves his own ass.

"Of course, a conspiracy charge would imply that President Trump did not act alone. And the criminal docket in the Southern District of Florida, actually shows five sealed cases handed up today, two of them with successive case numbers. This may, or may not, suggest that there might be other defendants in the case:

This being Lawfare, and not cable news, we are going to wait until there is an actual indictment before commenting on its strength or substance."

Yeah, didn't multiple people assert that they had returned everything already? Whoever did that, even if at the behest of Trump, is likely in trouble.

These new charges - whatever they prove to be - will almost certainly come down to proving the wilfulness of Trump's actions. It won't be enough to prove - for the public or a jury in all probability - that he knowingly removed classified documents and/or stored them inappropriately. They'll have to show he deliberately concealed them, abused his access to them, or deliberately obstructed the efforts to retrieve them or to investigate him.

In short, I expect it'll be in the difference between what Trump did and what Biden did where any criminal convictions will lie.

Hopefully the Georgia domino is next.

I disagree. I doubt the charges are brought in the first place unless there is overwhelming evidence. I don’t think this is a gamble on the part of the justice department.

America will never lock up a former President, sitting President or other extremely high ranking official like Secretary of State etc. Short of murder, they will find a way for some sort of plea deal, pardon etc.

I do think the charges and the evidence will be strong, very strong. I suspect we may be looking at very serious military related charges, perhaps coinciding with the Russian/Ukraine war. Perhaps documents related to US military options for the US President in the event of a nuclear strike or something along those lines. Information that can not make it's way into the hands of others.

I will say though, the evidence better be damming or else this has the look of a political witch-hunt that doesn't stop. Half the country is conservative and a huge portion of them love Trump, who is clearly the front runner for the Republican party and has a serious shot at a 2nd term in office.

I don't like the guy but if the evidence is someone left some door unlocked with classified documents or some Mara Lago guest walked into some room with some boxes containing information about some event in Africa 30 years ago, that isn't going to fly. I understand they breached attorney client privilege in this case so I assume he ordered his lawyers to tell the government he wasn't in possession of these documents or something.

This better be jaw dropping or else a huge portion of the country will freak out in a lot of ways. It can't be a scenario where his actions came right up to a red line of the law and it's a coin toss if he broke it or not depending on a trial. He better have stepped over the line so far that it's clear cut and having done so on very serious and national security related charges.

He will drag this on until after he is elected president again and will just dismiss the whole thing. And yes, he will win in 2024, never underestimate the stupidity of people in general.

By law, the trial must begin within 70 days of the indictment. I am sure there are delaying tactics, but if the indictment has been delivered to the defendant, we’ll see something happening in a courtroom by the 18th of August.

Hope they can prove all of this with overwhelming evidence, and have more than just this

Judge Aileen Cannon (a Trump appointee) is apparently the one to oversee the case. That's bad news, she basically ignored everything and did everything she could to help Trump previously until she got slapped down by higher courts.

That the DoJ isn't trying to get DC as the venue means things should start a lot sooner than if they'd tried for DC and there was a bunch of proceedings over that.

This is a huge issue, no? No matter what the outcome, she has both been kind to Trump in prior decision, and then criticized for it heavily. Either side will have a claim of bias
