Conny made a strong point about wanting players who want to be a Flame and aren’t just on the team for the check. It’s a known secret that he wants to be in Montreal. No thanks

I still think it is more he just wants out of Winnipeg which probably means he wouldn't sign here but if they go re-tool he is probably the best center available

PLD is exactly what this team needs… but, unless he signs an 8 year deal and actually commits to a team in his life, I want no part of him. The commitment issues are a red flag, which is a huge shame.

To play devils advocate, not sure I’d be signing long term in perennial lottery team Columbus or Winnipeg if I were him.

I think he'd actually go the way of Drouin if he signed with the Habs. I think he goes back to the States. Carolina is a decent fit.

Every time I turned on that Winnipeg-Las Vegas series, Dubois was taking one dumb penalty or another.

Looking at it from Calgary’s perspective, they are getting a chance at picking a top player that could be a number one centre in 2-3 years. There is always a risk with any draft pick not turning out but it’s a risk worth taking for a pick that high in this draft. Roslovic and Bean are serviceable players with upside that they could still reach.
From the Columbus perspective, they are getting an established #1 centre with proven chemistry with Gaudreau. A Gaudreau-Lindholm-Laine line could potentially be one of of the best lines in hockey for the next few years. They are also getting a solid top 2-3 defenceman that plays huge minutes and has shown huge improvement each year since he joined the flames.
And don’t discount the 16th overall pick for the Blue Jackets. There are lots of examples where picks taken in that range turn out better than at least one player taken in the top 5 of the same draft. There is a real possibility this trade looks better for the Blue Jackets in 3 years. At best, Carlsson (who the flames would likely draft at #3 overall) is as good as Lindholm by then.
I would still jump on this trade if it was available though. I think both teams take an equal risk/reward in this trade.

I think if they move that package they would need someone better than lindholm
I dont think the league views him as an established 1C, hes probably closer to the bottom as a 1C if anything
Great 2 way player, but he doesnt produce enough to be a 1C, outside last season where he shot 18% vs his career average of 12%, hes a 25-30 goal, 65-75 point player
Great 2C, exactly the type of player you want there

I'd at least like to see what this team can do under a regular coach. I'd like to see a lineup of:
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Konecny
Mangiapane-Kadri-Toffoli
Dube-Backlund-Coleman
Duehr/Pelletier/Coronato/Ruzicka (whoever makes the cut and can be shuffled up the lineup as necessary/earned)
It's just enough of a change to bring a lot of excitement back into the lineup. Swapping out a d-man for a more offensive d-man could also make a huge difference.
|
Once again, I believe a 'true' rebuild happens only if the Flames are forced into one by accidentally bottoming-out in the standings. Maybe they enter into a complete rebuild if all their upcoming UFAs make it clear that they will not be returning. Maybe then. I would think the Kadri and Huberdeau deals would be irrelevant anyway - team needs the cap to hit the floor in that (unlikely) scenario, so why would that stop a rebuild or hurt it? It isn't like they would be tearing the league a new one and artificially pushing this team up the standings either. If the Flames are competing, then you can make an argument for them to be an issue. For a rebuild, I don't think it is an issue - except that they probably wouldn't be happy about it. I personally would like to see a full rebuild as I don't think this team has the horses to really compete in the playoffs, but yes, some changes to this team might change things. Things just have to cllick, and this was a team that never really clicked at all last season, yet didn't fall on their face either.
However, I expect it to go one of two ways, and it is all up to Lindholm:
A) Lindholm decides to re-sign, and this team makes a series of win-now moves and trades to reshape this team a little.
B) Lindholm lets Conroy know that he will not re-sign, and Conroy then has to figure out what to do - continue with a win-now, or do a retool focusing more on youth and futures, but without tearing it completely down.
That's how I see it. I guess we will know what direction this team is going in a few weeks to months from now.

He probably wasnt, until we traded for him.
And PLD has made intentions clear. Huberdeau didnt, door was open once he was Flame.

Hubby was offered $84M when he was a year from UFA.
It’s extremely unlikely he was ever going to get a better deal, and he had extreme risk if he turned it down, coming off what was likely at the time a career year.
And I don’t believe he gave any indication he wouldn’t sign.

PLD was an embarrassment shortly before being traded from Columbus.
He's a great player, but I don't want someone who puts forth efforts like that, at any time, on the Flames.
Kadri was bad enough this season in that regard. Yet nowhere near as pouty as Dubois was at the end of his time in Columbus.

I don't get the appeal in chasing known quantities. I think this team needs to stop paying premiums for known quantities, and start focusing on building the next wave of them.

I wouldn't want PLD even if he wanted to play here. He's lazy, selfish, and seems to be ungrateful being a millionaire NHL player. He's not leading a team anywhere - his behaviour is a cancer, and I think we've all seen similar people in our workplaces - that attitude can be infectious.
