The issue is having an injured star player get healthy but he literally can't play because of the cap. Is that what you want in the playoffs?

Sure, it will encourage teams to try and game the system to max out that 10%, but it's better than the complete free-for-all that currently exists.
If you're the opposition with a cap compliant team that's about to face off against them for seven games, I would think so.

The whole point of a salary cap is league parity. If salaries are all the same, then the league should be balanced with an even distribution of talent. No more Detroit, NYR, Toronto, Colorado, etc being able to buy themselves a cup by out-spending the rest of the league by $30M-$40M.

Unless, of course, the city built on the premise of "the house always wins" figures out how to do it.

(what's the point of parity when it's thrown out the window when the games mean the most?)

Patrick and Lehner haven't played all season or playoffs so they shouldn't count as cap circumvention in any system. It's the players who make miraculous game one recoveries that are questionable.

Yeah, the Kucherov example was the most blatant.

On a different topic, has anyone seen the TV cameras show Tkachuk's family in the crowd like they kept doing last year? I haven't seen them, but I haven't watched all the games and sometimes watch the US broadcasts.

At the end of the day, if you aren't playing the salary cap this way then you aren't giving yourself access to every tool possible to ice a winner.

So we can talk about how LTIR ought to be, but it is the way it is and so long as it is that way you're doing your team a disservice if you aren't using it to benefit your team.

Nah, Stone or Smith. Kucherov was legit hurt and he delayed coming back maybe a couple weeks.

Stone was almost preplanned from the moment they got Eichel, and Smith just LTIRetired after playing every game of the previous POs. Too injured? right.

Smith is clearly cheating. I don't know about Stone because he seems to be made of glass. Played 80 games once in his entire career. That stuff has been going on since the Ottawa days.

Another commenter mentioned "miraculously" being ready for Game 1, which I think is what happened in Kucherov's case. I don't even think Kucherov played in the regular season that year.

He didn't. But his surgery (which admittedly was done late in the off season) had a recovery window which should have taken to about two weeks before POs). He delayed his return by at least that much (he was skating on his own).

The cleanup on that one is hard though - who's to tell a guy coming off major surgery when he's ready? Healing rates differ wildly.

I get the frustration. Team who don't cheat or at least play the cap game hard are not rewarded for it. But that's not part of the unlevel playing field since any team can do it and get away with it it seems.

Yeah, it's impossible to know from the outside. It just looks very convenient and suspicious when you have a league leading scorer miss a whole year and suddenly become available the moment the playoffs are ready to begin.

The frustrating part is the obvious cheating. Nobody blames the Oilers for Klefbom because that was an actual career threatening injury. What they did with Smith is clearly against the spirit of the rule.

It is preposterous and ridiculous and I love every minute of it. Its just so....Vegas.

Hey...lean into it.

But this is the Stanley Cup Finals, we should have a Game Thread for each game instead of one giant mega-thread.

The Panthers were lucky they did not touch the puck with one of their defensemen holding two sticks.

My answer is that the lineup you ice for any game in the playoffs has to be under the cap. Really shouldn't be that hard and wouldn't really discourage end of season trades either.
