I remember someone calling this on CP before the Flames and Treliving even parted ways. Some people seem to be in the know.

I called it a long time ago but I'm not in the know. It just seemed like there was something going on behind the scenes with the whispers and how Treliving seemed a little hands off with the coaching/players issue during the season. It seemed like Treliving was just riding it out this season.

As a buddy of mine said, maybe he'll trade Marner for room and in a year Matthew's walks in Free Agency thinking eff this! Be responsible for losing Chucky, Johnny, Matthew's and Marner...ooph!

It was Salim valji. He wrote a bold predictions article like in October that had this happening.

IMO he tried to insert some youth into lineup but Sutter and him didn’t seem to be on the same page on that issue.
Should be interesting to see what he can do with a team that won’t have near as many outside players, having clauses in contracts ,saying they aren’t interested in joining team. Also probably won’t have to overpay on middling players in ufa market like he did in a small market team like Calgary.

I don't think he is allowed to trade any of the core four. Dubas was insinuating something of that sort after they lost to the Panthers and he was out after that.

Does this also mean Treliving grabs Hamonic and forces Brodie to play LD? Leafs fans would love that

Not that NHL GMs are really putting together resumes. But Treliving leaving the Flames in the lurch saddled with a number of bloated contracts and pending UFAs as his last act makes this development ponderous. You really have to go great lengths to be drummed out of the NHL GM business.

By the time the wizard is done, the Leafs will be left with their best players winning the Stanley Cup
with another team, probably in California this time

IDK if they win with this core (unlikely IMO) it will hardly be Brad's doing

Matthews will either sign or he won't...won't have much to do with Brad, I'm sure he already knows.
It will be 13M+ if he does...than what? Not much for draft picks or in the system and no cap.

I think it was time for the Flames to get a new GM but Treliving wasn't terrible. After nine years of good and bad it was just time for a change. Every single GM makes bad moves. It's hard to question an organization like the Lightning but that Jeannot trade may go down as the worst move made by any organization last season. Hurricanes have been run extremely well but the Meier trade certainly doesn't look great right now and could look worse if they can't extend him. There are no GM's with perfect resumes so every team that conducts GM searches has the same task of choosing between GM's with past experience and looking at assistants or player agents that have no experience. There's no foolproof direction for teams here as either method can work or fail.

It’s a bigtime conundrum. The oilers have been in trouble because of McDavids contract and he and Draisaitl single handedly lead that team. Matthews isn’t that level to lead the team night in and out but he’s still a franchise player. I can’t conceive they get better unless they keep him though. So assume they keep him, one of Marner or Nylander must go. Marner is better and you’d get higher value but he doesn’t grow on trees. Nylander would get a decent return. Personally I think they ride or die with Matthews Marner combo in the years to come, and deal Nylander. When Tavares comes off the books in a couple seasons they’ll get the flexibility to pay Marner but you have to go with those two.

Agreed. I think Trelivings undoing was his long term contracts for aging players. Exactly the same thing that Sutter did. Terrible. Calgary may not be a preferred destination but to do those mistakes really f’s up an organization for years to come.

LOL Treliving hasn't even made a move yet and you are already downplaying him like you do with every ex-Flame. You know it's totally fine to hope for the best for ex-Flames as them changing teams doesn't mean you have to discredit them at every turn.

OMG you can't be serious
You have complained about Brad for how long? Now you defend his honor or something.
Anyway like I said they probably won't win but be real how would the Leafs winning with this core be all Brad?
Tons of people think this is a poor hire, but call me out. You hate everything Flames until they leave.
What move is he gonna make? Sign Matthews that Kyle would have signed and then be capped out and bring back 90% the same team. Because I bet you that is what happens. Leafs aren't making big changes.
