Not going to blame treliving entirely for Johnny and Matty leaving, but it's no secret the earlier contract negotiations rubbed both players the wrong way. I'm interested to see if he mishandles Matthews and seals the end of his tenure in T.O. as well.

He's a good guy and a consummate pro, but he left the Flames in unappealing shape for his succcesor because he bit off more than he could chew last summer with the big contracts and extensions. And Kadri was overkill.

Maybe he learns this time. Maybe not.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Time for Kadri to come home.

Wonder who Tre will be in on first.
Treliving had his faults in his first GM stint and will likely learn from a lot of it. But were do you get the idea that he is naive? As a person he seems to exude the exact opposite of that, and the respect he has from anyone that has spoken about him suggests the opposite as well (Burke, etc).

If he thinks he’s going to have more autonomy in Toronto than in Calgary, ya right.

They will tell him what he wants to hear but I suspect his reality will be a lot different.

You don’t need to blame him, but I will. Thanks a lot brad, for trading our best player since Iginla for a top 4 d and a flash in the pan Huby! Thanks for leaving the team as bad or worse then when you nherited it. Thanks for hiring #### coach after #### coach. Thanks for hiring boat anchor after boat anchor contact. Thanks for letting our best offensisve player walk as a Ufa for free. But especially, thanks for finally leaving and hopefully ruining another team even a fraction of how bad you’ve left the flaming C. Thank god he left and forced Murray’s hand

The NHL seems to be a revolving door for mediocre GMs. Treliving is definitely one of them.

Leafs are close and Tre just might get them over the hump. Excellent GM. Excited that he's here in Toronto!

First of all this is one of the worst kept secrets in the NHL over the past year. It's clear for a while now that there was an understanding between Treliving and the Leafs that there may be an opportunity this summer for him to takeover. It's why he didn't rock the boat with Darryl and just let things play out seeing he never planned on returning to the Flames and really I think it was probably time for a change anyway. He seems like a genuinely good guy so I wish him the best in Toronto.

I don't know. What exactly did Dubas do outside of shuffle deck chairs in Toronto? That core was in place when he took over and rather make any difficult decisions he just kept tinkering. He's left the team in a similar situation that Treliving was criticized here in signing Matthews to a bridge deal that's expiring the same time Nylander's deal is expiring. Matt Murray was a terrible trade. His biggest move was signing Tvares which hasn't really worked out. The difference between the two is that Treliving won't be afraid to make a big change to the team whereas Dubas was way too attached to the core 4 that clearly can't get it done in the playoffs. IMO Treliving did more with less in Calgary.

I expect Treliving will make moves to upgrade the defense seeing that was one of his passions in Calgary and that may not be a bad idea. That said he was terrible at choosing head coaches but in Toronto he will have more willing candidates to choose from and budget won't be an issue. Still it will be interesting to see where he goes. I would not be shocked if Huska and Love get interviews as he always seemed reluctant to hire a veteran head coach and working with Darryl certainly won't help change that mentality. I think Leafs fans will like the excitement of Treliving always being involved in trade talks and rumours as he will be more active than Dubas.

The last time we lost our GM to Toronto and hired a rookie GM this happened:

Flames traded Gilmour, Ric Nattress, Jamie Macoun, Kent Manderville and Rick Wamsley to Toronto for Gary Leeman, Craig Berube, Alexander Godynyuk, Michel Petit and Jeff Reese.

The spiral down the toilet began in earnest...
I hope Conny looks back, far back..

Yeah Conny would be wise to be very cautious in regards to any trade talks with his former boss for at least the first year. Treliving will be in the position of knowing inside information on players in both organizations which is a big advantage if they were to engage in trade talks.

Happy to see Treliving go to Toronto. If there is a franchise that deserves to be destroyed and wander the wilderness for another decade or more it's the Leafs. Treliving will make that happen and rob them of any future they hope to have. Enjoy Toronto Tre, us anti-Leaf fans are happy you're there.

So close! One of these years they might make it past the second round! Only took 19 for the first, after all.

Dubas made plenty of trades IMO. He was just bad at them. Didn’t like Treliving trading picks? Dubas traded a first for 11 games of Foligno.

I hope Toronto never ever ever wins another Stanley Cup.

...but the one silver lining if it does happen will be watching a lot of CP posters' brains explode.

Good luck Brad.

One of the better GMs in the league and has likely learned from some of his mistakes here.

Expecting him to do even better in Toronto.

A bit tough for Treliving if he does get the job.

Keep this in mind: He has this season to deal with. He has to figure out if he is able to re-sign Matthews to an 8-year deal. He also has to figure out whether or not he can re-sign Nylander to a reasonable cap hit or let him go and retool. He never did that with us, so I am not expecting that at all.

Leafs fans are going to crucify him if they lose either one of Matthews or Nylander for nothing. And if either are traded because an extension can't be reached, also a call for his head. Dubas left Brad a tough mess to deal with for the 2023/2024 season.

Both Dubas and Treliving were mediocre GMs in their first tenure. Have either learned anything from their experience is the question.

His deadline deals this season were pretty puzzling as well.

What Treliving has on Dubas or a lot of other candidates is he's walked the walk in the near exact situation. I expect he should be better with the experience of last offseason under his belt. That said the players still have the final say so he's going to have to try to get to know the players quickly and look for the telltale signs that he may have been oblivious to when dealing with Tkachuk. If Matthews is a matter purely of money then I imagine he will get it done and simply move Nylander as that's the obvious play.
