Imagine if he hires darryl sutter and it turns out it was all a ruse to divide the fans.

Considering his draft history maybe it’s a bad idea to say he can’t be part of the draft.

Decision-makers around the league understand that managing a small-market Canadian team is managing in hard mode, and Treliving did quite well considering the limitations he was under. He drafted well, signed good contracts, and took the big swings in trades. He’s well-connected and well-liked by his peers. The loss of Tkachuk and Gaudreau had more to do with geography and the owner’s mandate to not take a step back than a lack of due diligence on Treliving’s part.
Toronto is a marque NHL market with deep pockets. GM of the Leafs is the dream job of half the executives in the league. The fact they picked Treliving shows how well-regarded he is in hockey circles.

They can only spend the same amount as the Flames.

Very happy that Toronto hired Treliving. Can’t wait to see Toronto collapse under his regime. Too bad Edmonton wasn’t in the market for a GM… lol

Kinda of wondered if this has been in the works for awhile. Murray probably knew and is partly why he wouldn't allow Treliving to interview. We knew Toronto was interested awhile back but some things seemed to conveniently fall into place.

A huge step up for Tre. Basically now he can show what he can do without the small market constraints. Will he actually be good? We'll see.

…on player salaries. They spend a lot more on everything else associated with an NHL team, from scouts to training facilities, data wonks, capologists, nutritionists, coaches, etc.

I'm curious the price. I like Nylander. Good number three option on any championship team. Undersized to be the first option against teams' shut down players, but this team needs his speed more than anything. No idea what his propensity would be to sign here either. So unless he's willing to sign an extension I wouldn't bother. Nylander straight up for Lindholm? Only a years' difference so it would be making a trade for the sake of a different skillset. Dunno.

Strange having our GM go to another team. Typically they're so bad they never get another job again!
I wish him well! He's definitely inheriting a hell of a team.

Probably the same owner that was reported to have vetoed the Dubas extension at the beginning of the season. I wouldn't be shocked if they were talking to Treliving even before it was announced he wasn't returning to the Flames. It's just kind of funny that all season long, people in the media were pointing out that both Treliving and Dubas were on expiring contracts and that Treliving might be eyeing the Toronto job, and that is exactly what it appears will happen.

I don't think so. FWIW, Tannenbaum is seen as a generally trustworthy owner. Bell and Rogers are the other owners. I think the rumor was one owner was for the extension and two weren't. Doubtful that it was a grand conspiracy. Dubas just didn't negotiate in an ethical way, perhaps getting wind of other potential offers for him, and Shanahan made the decision. The availability of Treliving probably made it easier to make that decision but from there the chips fell where they did. If Shanahan signed Treliving right away I'd guess something was up but I'm sure Tannenbaum's relationship with Treliving Sr. made the ownership comfortable heading down this route.

Very interested to see what he does with that team. Best of luck Tre, I wish you luck, but not so much luck that you win a cup there

Tre is so naive. He’s going to get eaten alive.
This will be entertainment at its finest.
Wonder who Tre will be in on first.

Treliving likes to poach from his former team/clubs he's personally familiar with.
Soo.. be smart Connie.
