I would hope so, they've been drafting top 10 for over a decade lol

Buddy Robinson isn't responsible for that. Sequencing of wins and losses doesn't matter and winning the draft lottery is luck.

If we trade Hanifin, I wonder how people would feel if we went after a UFA like Matt Dumba?

Trading a dman for a big return and getting one free as UFA seems like a solid plan

Do not want. He’s rapidly progressing down the Hamonic trajectory.
I’d sooner go with someone like Dumoulin or Graves if we have cap freed up and are going the UFA route for backfilling the defence.

Sabres need a goalie and some defencemen. They did well in their trades for Eichel and ROR getting Thomson, Tuch and Krebs. They have some other decent drafted talent up front in Cozens, And they drafted two potentially great Dmen, but the rest is a big question mark. And goalies... They better hope Levi blossoms.

Doesn't have to be dumba but someone. It's actually a decent list 9f UFA'S, some 2ill sign for sure but there is a decent list of available players.

It wasn't until the Sabres started making solid trades that they saw any kind of success. They didn't draft any of their top 3 scorers, and only 1, Jeff Skinner, was drafted in the top 10. The lesson is basically that no amount of high draft picks will outweigh poor asset management and trades.

Seems like a downgrade at offence. The Flames desperately need a talented offensive defencemen who can both log top 4 minutes and quarterback the PP. The Flames trading the defenceman with the second best offensive numbers and acquiring another shut down guy, seems like a step in the wrong direction.

Trading young players to sign older UFAs is not something I want to see ever again.
If they trade Hanifin, fine. Just let someone like Dennis Gilbert play for league minimum.

If you play a better veteran D on a short contract it doesn't really hurt you at all long term. Unless you are actually trying to tank.

Oh, sure, I agree with that. That person said Dumba is a UFA. I didn't look it up, but I've had enough of signing UFAs. The value of a player is when they are 18-28, after that I quickly get disinterested.

I'd just keep Stetcher and I assume Kylington will be back too.
I agree that signing an UFA dman doesn't make sense, at least this summer. Step 1 of this retool is finding some high end star players. Sign a vet Dman just so we can pick 10-16 again next year doesn't really help.
Every move will depend on who actually wants to re-sign this summer. If Lindholm stays and we keep Toffoli and Backlund then maybe trading Hanifin for assets and signing a vet makes sense. But my guess is Lindholm will be gone this summer

I balked when we picked up Stecher, but boy was he good for us. Hope he comes back.

Yes, I agree with this. Stecher isn't going to hurt because we don't have to offer an 8-year deal. Just let people like Gilbert and Kuznetsov play. It's pretty unlikely the Flames are going to challenge for the Cup next year.
Assembling a core of 18-23 year-olds is what should be the plan over the next five seasons. Lock them up to max term RFA deals at 21-22. Then you can augment that with some Bjorkstrands or Barbashevs when the timing is right.

For example, Ruzicka, 8x2.5. Who would say no? Pelletier 8x4? Get these players on board because those are the sort of contracts that can return value in spades. Like what Tre did with Lindholm and Hanifin.

Giving Ruzicka 20 million dollars over the next 8 years is gross. He would sign that so fast.

Signing players like that to long term cheap deals is a double edged sword. You better be sure they are very self motivated individuals because there is very little in the way of external motivation when you know you aren't getting a raise for the next 8 years even if you turn into a superstar point producer.
