I will admit my knowledge of the intricacies of equalization is lacking (however, i would argue most people who complain about it know even less).
I don't personally think it's fair to provinces and voters to withhold money because they are not developing resources - it should be the voters' choice (think eastern slopes mining in Alberta); but, i believe, the idea of equalization is based on fiscal capacity.
So couldn't the potential revenues of a certain resource project count as fiscal capacity of that province? It would be horribly confusing and a bastard to try to calculate, though

Usually because those challenges come from posters who absolutely can’t resist getting into the fun themselves.
It’s completely meaningless and probably just a challenge to step it up when posters like zamler, wastedyouth, or dieHARD finger wave about decorum, given their posting histories or participation in this very thread. Then people mock them for it, they immediately take the bait, and we’re off to the circus.
Personally, I prefer a good circus.

I think it's time to accept that, regardless of policy and opposition, the NDP brand is simply too toxic to voters in Alberta. It's time that a new party be formed that better aligns with the views of the electorate, without the NDP-branded baggage.
Something that captures the changing views and demographics of the province, while simultaneously acknowledging the broader feelings of the voter base.
Something progressive, yet conservative.
If there's anyone here that can think of a suitable name that's both on-brand and available, I'd love to hear it.

As always, it's only one side of the argument that has dropped the pretense of decorum, while the other side is forced to hold their noses and engage them on their own terms, how utterly reprehensible.

It is possible to be pragmatic when it comes to a voting decision.
All politicians are kind of the worst, just pick the ones that you think will do the best job for you locally and represent your communities needs and values, regardless of their party, is my mindset.
Everything else is just message board/social media outrage and fodder!

I again ask why you were offended by my statement that you are a bigot. You agreed that there are known, vocal bigots in the party and leadership. You agree that you should be choosing politicians that share your community's needs and values.
So you, in fact, agree that your values are bigoted?
Help me make sense of your conflicting statements.

Pretty sad day for me. I've got lots of family members who work in health care, not just in Alberta but other provinces. All of them have pretty similar feelings about what's happening in Alberta and I doubt yesterday improved any opinions. I also have family and friends who some UCP candidates think are a blight on society. They woke up today to find out that a majority of Albertans agree with these candidates. Luckily some of them have the ability to pick up and leave, but it'll be sad to see some born and raised Albertans flee the province. And this isn't bluster...some of them have been planning for a while in case this came to pass.

Genuinely curious what province they would move to. If that province has a better run health care system it may be something Alberta can use as a model.

Why do people worry so much about how the other side of a debate behaves? If you’re right it really shouldn’t matter and in most cases should help your position.

The last conservative party in power wrote the current rule book on equalization. KENNEY himself was holding the pen. Harper was Prime Minister!
Seems like you should take it up with those guys if you don't like the formula.
If you're finance oriented, you could consider it a continued payback of the massive funds eastern provinces invested in the west to make it colonizable by europeans. Alberta didn't just spring up with rail tracks and roads and cities from nothing.
Lastly, no money ever goes directly from one province to another. This point is infuriating- it's ignorance or purposeful misrepresentation of the issue at hand. We should be proud to be the engine of Canada, not greedy squandering scoundrels discussing the notion of "5 new arenas per year". Get ####ed if that's your priority over enhancing the quality of life of fellow canadians. Just go live in the woods if you want to think only of yourself.
