This isn't getting upset about a hockey game. This is real stuff.
I have no family doctor right now because mine is leaving the province because of the government.
That's real stuff.
So yeah people are upset.
|
Yeah I got that feeling yesterday as well, when being called a crybaby etc.
Those people seem to think this is a game. This isn't hockey.
Its real life and we are in trouble.
I may have different views on hockey with a lot of posters here but it seemed I was in lockstep with the same ones here on matter which are much more important which was great to see.
Unfortunately the rest of the province felt having a bigot, criminal, podcaster was a great option for premier.
Ugly morning for us.

I'm not serious my good man.
Born and raised in rural Alberta, I'd say I understand it just fine.

I think this thread has nailed it. Everyone who didn't vote for the NDP is a stupid racist bigot who has been hoodwinked into believing the lies of danielle smith unlike the extremely smart and savvy NDP voters who are virtuous heroes protecting us from fascism.
Keep going with that narrative, see how well that works out for you.

One thing to note - the UCP boasts about attracting young people to buy houses and live in the province, but they fail to mention those people bring their politics with them. And those same young people are generally more progressive.
Winning both Edmonton and Calgary still means a party can govern in the Leg with a majority. Flip a couple more Calgary ridings and the whole UCP majority instantly falls apart. Calgary North, Calgary Northwest, Calgary Bow, Calgary Cross, Calgary East were all within a relative hair of being lost to the NDP, which would have put the parties at a 44-44 balance.
The UCP should not be doing victory laps for very long. They have huge, huge ground to regain in Calgary if they want to enjoy longevity.
"Alberta is Calling" might inevitably do the current government in.
|
This is possible but I'll steal a page out of Muta's book, what type of people would a UCP government attract? Probably conservative young people. Maybe even conservative retirees. So that might backfire.
And if this government is attracting anyone that means it is doing well. They would be very difficult to defeat in 2027 if they are united and not a dumpster fire. The NDP threw all the negativity at Smith in this campaign. If she does well and all of her platform promises are successful (very big if), what does the NDP throw at her now?
So i don't think that new people coming to the province is actually a good thing. It means Alberta and its government are attractive.

On a vote split from progressives. 46% of the vote went to the NDP and Libs, while 40% went to Doug. Over 50% if you include the Greens.
I've gotten one comment this morning and it was "so Alberta elected Smith, hey?" and then it was an eye-roll.
Most everyone else doesn't give a #### about Alberta here, now or any other time during an election cycle.

Nope. People who want to afford homes but are getting priced out of the GTA and Golden Horseshoe. That's it. Affordability. And when Edmonton and Calgary are too expensive they'll just continue heading east to the Maritimes or to Saskatchewan or Manitoba.
Has nothing to do with Alberta being appealing on its own, it has everything to do with salaries and living comfortably.
I live here, I know.

There's a lot of name calling in here, but what it comes down to for me; is that my life is going to be worse for this result. I am not rich and I don't work in oil and gas. Almost everyone in the province not in those categories are going to take a hit here.

My (re-elected) MLA just called. We chatted for 30 minutes. We disagree on several major points. We’ve been friends for years and that won’t change despite our political differences. He’s hoping for a cabinet post.

What's their position on Smith's tenure in the party? Would love it if the moderates in the party give her the slip, but not holding my breath.

You know what is the silver lining in all this? The most adamant middle class UPC supporters will be taking the brunt from new breed of UPC. Like when Kenny almost immediately messed with 1.5 banked time that almost exclusively hurt oil patch workers without regular hours. The fights with teachers and doctors leading to massive problems. Oh the scandals from MLA’s who can now talk unfiltered. It will be a great to watch.

Can we all remember that Danielle Smith said smoking was good for you in 2002, encouraged vaccine hesistancy, floated the idea that Alberta needs a a chief naturopath, and stood behind a wild rose candidate that said gay people will burn in a lake of fire. You are complicit in accepting those world viewpoints even if you don't hold those views personally. Anyone expecting the UCP to save healthcare has lined up behind a person who has been spouting crazy health views since the early 2000s and called DeSantis her hero.

UCP has majority. They won the war, but lost a lot of key battles and ceded a lot of territory during that war. They can't continue to take their position of power for granted or they risk being toppled.
|
Why'd any MLA cross the floor and put their political career at risk? Alberta just showed that they will vote for any party leader that is conservative.

But Danielle Smith recently said don't listen to anything she was caught saying before the election! It's all not true!

Yeah but I don’t like the colour orange. It’s gross looking. If that means a bunch of radical right wing psychos in power so be it.
Plus there’s nothing wrong with some light bigotry and racism in government as long as corporate taxes stay low. I like money more than I like gays or immigrants anyways.
