Default Commonly used Generic Phrases in the English Language

Thought it might be fun, after hearing the TBQH Olympics at the 'Dome today, to hear from everyone what other cases they've seen of this type of stuff.

Other than Sutter's "To be quite honest" obviously...

I had a prof last term that me and some buddies had a count for "Quote, Unquote" (With the 2 handed finger bobbing action). After the term, we figured she was at about 90-100 , or twice per lecture.

Discuss...

Do you remember her name? I had one that did the exact same thing, she did it ALL the time.

Whatever a guy can get out of it.. or If a guy could get this going..

I had a boss who said that pretty much every time he explained something for me to do.

My boss uses the "quote, un-quote" finger thing while saying "Magma"..

He really is evil

Think outside the box.

It seems to me that when a person uses that cliche, he is doing the exact opposite of what he is proposing. He is, ahem, thinking inside the box.

And a hockey-centric one that I've never understood goes something like this:

We need more out of our offensive players; your Jarome Iginlas, your Kristian Huseliuss, your Daymond Langkows.

Why not "We need more out of our offensive players: Jarome Iginla, Kristian Huselius and Daymond Langkow"?

I am bad for a few phrases, specifically "At the End of the day" and "Ultimately".

Lately I've become fond of "There's the rub".

At work I like to tell people in jest that they need to "work smarter not harder". For some reason that really grinds people's gears. Oh that's another one I like the phrase "Grinds my gears".

I have a Doc I work for that always says, "then the issue becomes....." to whenever someone makes a suggestion to a current issue being discussed.

"that begs the question"

Which everyone uses wrong, but the correct usage really seems convoluted.

I used to have a prof that always said "...and what have you."
We also did a count for him, because that is annoying as all hell.

I had a journalism prof that used to say, "I don't mean to brag, but..." all the flippin' time. It drove everyone crazy, because, hell yeah, he meant to brag. The whole course was pretty much a reading of his resume.

It used to drive me UP THE FREAKING WALL when my profs back in university would say stuff like, "Okay, so in actuality you'd need to take this and that into account, but that's beyond the scope of this course..."

Makes me feel like a useless little peon who isn't smart enough to be taught whatever it is that is "beyond the scope of the course".

This dude I work with ALWAYS says "basically" at the beginning of every other sentence... drives me up the FREAKING WALL MAN!!!!

I also hate the word "frankly" which is used A LOT on this board.

Oh damn, that bugs the hell out me me also.

Not really a phrase, but I absolutely hate it when you ask someone a question and they respond with "it depends".

Of course everything depends on something else, but we're just having a simple exchange that I'm hoping won't last more than 2 minutes, so just give me an answer. Dummies.
