Yeah, between her love of DeSantis, crazy covid ramblings, and Pawlosski I thought the city people would vote against her but I always underestimate how Albertans actually want to be part of the States.

Ugggh - I had the discussion with my parents (Deep South Calgary) about the election yesterday. They are voting for UCP because Smith is gonna stick it to Trudeau.

I tried every angle to educate them on their current/future needs and there is no way to turn them away. I just shake my head. My parents sadly feed off the red meat.

Lets save the dooming for later tonight, I know plenty of filthy SE'ers who voted NDP. The lawn sign game in my community is pretty even, in years past it was a sea of blue.

Even subconsciously I think this election is important- I caught myself dressing up to go vote!

Just finished listening to The Strategists podcast. Both Corey Hogan and Stephen Carter predicted a 45-42 NDP majority. They think the actions of the campaigns and following the leader's movements over the last couple days outweigh the polling.

Either way it comes down to the get-out-the-vote efforts, and whether some of the reluctant conservatives decide to stay home.

I managed to get my mom to switch to voting NDP, she's in Banff-Kananaskis so it could be a tight race.

I had less luck with my dad. "We need more companies moving to Alberta and they won't if the NDP are in charge". I'm not sure why that matters to him, he's retired. He's in Calgary-Mountain View so hopefully his UCP vote doesn't matter anyway.

We should each do predictions here to see who gets closest. Mine is 48-39 UCP.

New York Times: Alberta’s Vote Will Test American-Style Far-Right Politics

Ms. Smith likes to extol right-wing U.S. politicians, for example, calling Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a Republican running for president, her hero.

She also has floated ideas that most Canadians would never support, like charging fees for public health care.

Ms. Smith now finds herself, analysts say, far to the right of many conservative loyalists, turning what should been a near-certain victory for her party into a close race that has provided an opening for their opponents, the New Democratic Party, a leftist party.

“This would not be a close race if anyone other than Danielle Smith was leading the U.C.P.,” said Janet Brown, who runs a polling firm based in Calgary, Alberta’s largest city.

Giant Blue Ring @GiantBlueRing

It's hard to see him in this video because he's wearing camo, but Theo says vote for Danielle Smith so we can "get the hell out of this dystopian nightmare", unaware the UCP have been in power for 4 years.
Still on the fence? Just do the opposite of Theo. #abvotes #VoteNDP

43-43. The last riding will be a <100 vote lead for NDP and require multiple recounts. Probably some related violence or something in the week to follow.

Is it just me or is this election garnering more national attention than others we have had? Global National is broadcasting from Edmonton this evening and was in Calgary yesterday. Mercedes Stevenson's national show yesterday was wholly about the election and CTV news has heavily focusses on it the past few days.

I don't recall this much interest at a national level before. Seems like there is much interest as either way Alberta is going to choose something that is somewhat out of character - either an NDP government or a government that seems to have been hijacked by special interest groups. It may be a bellweather to see if this is creeping into Canadian politics like it has in south of the border.

I'm going to be very, very surprised if this isn't a UCP majority. Alberta is going to Alberta IMO.

Which is too bad, really. Long term, having 2 capable governments competing for your votes is a good thing. Always voting one way is like having a sole source supplier....nothing good comes of it unless you're the supplier.

Pierre will be watching closely. Brutal bellweather that American style politics works here as well.

Probably just going to abstain today. Don't like the NDP and also don't like Danielle Smith and just don't want to have any responsibility for either, lol. In Airdrie, this is unlikely to matter as I expect the Angela Pitt to win with at least 60% of the vote.

Not voting makes you responsible for whoever wins though
